Nations which are most TrustWorthy and the Biggest Backstabbers?

Which nations always seem to be out to get you? and which ones can you typically rely on?

For me I have yet to see Milan, France, HRE, Venice ever actually stay in good relations with me. I decide to go on a crusade and here comes Milan waltzing in to my castle with 20 unites of Geonese Crossbowmen

Then on the other hand there is people like Portugal, Middle Eastern Countries, Poland, Hungary who actually seem to be there for you when you need them.

Post your experiences with your good alliances and then your not so good alliances.

Ahh... good ol' backstabbing vanilla. To be honest all factions with back-stab you sooner or later. Especially if you are the strongest faction in the game. I'd suggest to get a small mod if you like the vanilla feel. Like... VanillaMod

Nah I'm mostly getting at which nations do you never ally with and which ones you will typically ally with?

I honestly don't need help with the crummy negotiations of the AI, I was just curious about others experiences

Hungary ...they were my allies in my polish game, when they betrayed me, right as the venetian stack came to attack krakow. I didn't have enough money to make a true stack, and I ended up killing off Hungary while being gutted by venice.

Bad Allies: Milan, France, etc

Better Allies: Portugal, Turkey, etc

depends on what faction u play as i mostly play denmark russia byzentines and portugal
Denmark good allies are russia papal states and whoever is at war with holy romans while horrible allies are holy rome milan and poland
Russia is good alies with byzentines denmark and whoever is at war with oland and hungary bad allies are poland and hungary obviously but also holyy rome
Byz allies are russia and thats basicly it bad allies is everyone else besides papal states
portugal good allies are papal states and venice along with maybe england

I find the father away your ally is, the better chance he won't backstab you. Playing as Byzantium, I retained an alliance with England all the way to the very end. Mind you, I had to break some other alliances, but in the end it worked out best for both of us. The most treacherous faction always seems to be Venice, they will call you friends, then tie you up and steal your purse, and throw you in a pond. Then come back the next day and beg for a truce.

im doing a campaign right now with HRE and i have almost all of central europe under my control and the only nations that havnt back stabbed me are france and denmark..i think denmark was going to but i made a full stack of knights and there army turned away.

A good foundation for an alliance(Common enemy which are more powerful than them like HRE and poland) couple that up with an marriage alliance and denmark was my most trustworthy ally in my France game.(oh i love that save, mention it in like 4 threads now)

So if you want an alliance to last: Marriage rights!

Actually, I have to admit Poland is extremely trustworthy and I have never gone wrong with them.
In my first HRE campaign, all neighbours went to war with me except Poland who never backstabbed me once throughout the campaign. They even went as far as attacking Hungary because they attacked me.
I didn't enjoy destroying them later in the game as that white blob in my territory didn't look pretty.

The only trustworthy ones are those far away and the biggest backstabbers are the Italian factions. They always need to declare war when I am fighting 2 other ones.

I usually trust Portugal, Russia and England, I think

Yeah all the Italian factions are backstabbers and aggressive, regardless of their strength compared to yours.

In truth all factions can be hostile to you, but most won't break an alliance, or if they do it's just a minor thing (such as blockading a port, then asking ceasefire 2 turns after it).

Italians however, it's like "hey! let's be friends!! ^^ and while you are not looking I'll attack you with 3 full stacks at the same time yay friendship and comraderie!"

The most trustworthy for me are Scotland, Portugal, HRE, Poland and Egypt.

The Pope is an ass, Milan is the worst, Venice can be both a precious ally and a backstabber, and sicily the same.

The French always betray, even if they take a lot of time, when they do, it's because they really want to destroy you, unlike most other factions.

For me there a few reliable factions.
Mostly those who have enough problems already and/or weak. Scotland, Poland, Pope, Russia...
Also in Kingdoms there is usually a lasting alliance between KoJ-Antioch, Poland-Lithuania, or the sy./Aztecs if they can get an ally.


But basicly every single rebel settlement you take, increases the chance to be in war.
For example as Hungary, if I take Zagreb, I WILL be in war with the HRE and Venice sooner or later.
It seems that everybody in eastern europe wants Kiev, everybody in the west mediterran Cagliari/Tripolii, everybody in the Balkans Constantinopole, and of course the crusade targets.


BUT if I choose a few factions who are neutral towards each other usually, and I bribe them from the beginning (like Poland, and Venice as Hungary), I can keep them happy, even if I share a border with them.

Portugal, Milan, Venice, Sicily, France are all back stabbers. If you share borders with any of these better have watchtowers and forts ready to check any military migrants. For some reason France and HRE never waged a war against each other in my campaigns. That's the only exception.

Factions I trust are Poland, Papal States, the Moors and Spain. They won't do anything stupid and will generally be there when circumstances are favourable.

I never know what Hungary will be like. They're either very trustworthy or despicable.

isn't it a good idea to ally with reliable factions? i think thats a big factor that everyone seems to be missing here since the AI plays its role according to events

Depends on what faction you are. Some are more hated than others. In my Portugal campaigns, my best allies are the English, even when I share borders with them, and the Egyptians.
