Yes they did, at least according to Pompeius Magnus, who I've asked when making research for my late Roman portraits. If I understood it correctly, the attic helmet was still in use ( by generals and high ranking officers ) throughout the 5th and even first half of the 6th century, but by the late 6th and early 7th century it had vanished.
