You have to place the armies around the target army before you attack. When the battle starts you get to choose whether you want to control the armies or if they will be controlled by the computer. You can only control 20 units, so if you try to control your other armies too they will stay off the map until you lose units.

You're welcome! If you decide to control the extra armies you won't be able to use more than 20 units simultaneously. If you let the computer use the armies then they will all enter the battlefield together at the start.

Sadly yes, started a battle some days ago and controlled only the attacking army led by a captain. My faction leader´s army (AI-controlled) entered the battle and my king charged. Needless to say that he was one of the first casualties of the battle.

yeah you can lose heavily when using the AI for your armies.
i had that once in my invasion of Italy with the seleucid empire.
1 stack of SS and SL + Cathaphracts and some other Heavy Cavalry
and the other stack was of SS and Elephants, Chariots, and some archers i believe
so i attacked the senate on the field but i forgot to uncheck the window
so yeah the chariots decided to do a kamikaze attack on the principes.
the elephants where never used, and the SS pikemen where just walking in phalanx formation.
so yeah i had to start from my last save

If you want a really interesting battle, try to see if 3 enemy armies can attack 3 of your armies, and all 6 armies are on the field together.
