Default Where does the Pope run off too?

I am playing as the Byzies in SS 6.3, and finally retook Rome and all territories associated with the Papacy. I had thought that the Pope would spawn near Rome once the new one was elected. However, 2 turns later, I have yet to find the pope.

I would love to have the Pope as a vassal.

So does anyone know where he goes when he has no territories left to his name?

Are you sure he has no territories at all anymore? And how many Popes did you kill? The catholics might be running short on Cardinals to join the curia, and then be elected Pope.

Yep. Toggle_fow reveals no territories under his control.
I also only killed two popes during my war with the Papal States and there seem to be other cardinals around...

Is he hiding in one of the woods near Rome? Waiting to ambush your unsuspecting full-stack armies?

This is something I thought of just a minute ago and I've begun to scour the woods nearby.
    So far: Nothing.
I am going to continue my search through all of Italy though if I must!

Send a spy to search the woods. Preferably a good one.

there should be a message that when you kill him it mentions he has gone into hiding and will appear again when the time is right... or that is when you truly kill him, i don't recall lol
Don't forget to rep me if you like something I did/ or not lol

First of all, you only get that one when he's a target for your assassins, requested by the council.
Second, you'll only know that he has gone into hiding, not where he did so.

Well despite all the recommendations, I am unable to find him...

I found a Papalian general though. Hiding out in the forests near Naples. No pope to be found though...

Is there a possibility that he is near the capital or city of another state?
In the previous game i was playing as the Byzs (SS6.2rc4) the pope suddenly appeared with a ship next to Constantinople. I had an alliance with him (i always try to get that alliance from the beginning to "force" them to be less aggressive. They broke it and were at war with the HRE which were my allies at the time. Sicily had also taken Rome.
And yet Pope sat around Constantinople for many turns.

    I finally found him!

No, he wasn't in any far away land, or hiding in any forest. He just appeared. Out of nowhere, he was near Rome again. Weird...

New question. Why can't I force him into vassalship? Perhaps because I am still at war with some of his allies? I never recall this being a problem...

Click ceasfire (but don't offer it) and then see if vassalage becomes available to choose (that's how it works in Empire, I never offer vassalage in MTW2 so I don't know for sure).

About the 'very strong' part: I believe it has to do something with the armies/settlements ratio.

    Allies increase your power.
Next time you ally a strong faction at the beginning of a campaign, look at your power display, it'll probably increase a step or two.

Good to know. This means I must destroy the Geonese and Sicilians quickly. Will I be able to request vassalship then?

No idea, sorry. But at least it'll get them down from "Very Strong"

It'll also help to get better reputation and better relations with the papacy. Just give them some money and map information.
