I can't get any new family members as Venice

I just started a Venice campaign, and I can't seem to get any new family members or marriage proposals for my family members and all the adoption proposals that I get are either too old or suck. I have already restarted four times and by turn 10 I still, only have three family members in my family tree.
So can anyone give me some tips on how to get more adoption proposals and marriage proposals and also how old can a family member get before the can't have anymore children.

in my experience the more settlements i capture/own the more family members i own, try not to adopt folks tho as they tend to be old and die quickly cuz of that ;p

late campaign with Genoa...
i dont remember ever being pleased with the way my family developped, in any campaign, but this beats them all. much like the OP, my royal (well, rich banker) family is giving me hell.

the 3 guys coming of age early in the campaign are 40 now, a great dread general and 2 decent administrators. neither got an offer for marriage by generic chicks, i snagged a wandering french princess for Puccio out of despair. she was very charming but, once they were married, showed herself to be absolutely barren. no kiddies out of that pair.
this puccio is now the faction leader because his father and grandfather (original Doge) died of old age some time ago.
so he has his brother the good administrator (age ~40 and unmarried) and a nephew (age 38 and unmarried). those 3 guys are my only generals now.
this nephew has 3 sisters (not game characters because their father never was in line for succession)
these 3 girls are all in their late 30s now, never had a single marriage offer for any of em, or maybe a few 50 year old incompetent which i turned down.
the 4th and final game character is princess Wotsurname the Gorgon whom i kept around as a diplomat rather than allow her to marry one of the 60 year old offered to her.

I control Genoa, Milan, Pisa, Ajaccio, Carsalis (? the southern island, anyway) and the Crimea colony. that's 6 settlements only 2 of which are governed. and i have one cool scary general/king whom i anxiously try to keep away from my settlements lest he acquires the CrapGeneral/greatTaxguy thing from the italian cities.
GIVE ME A GODDAMN MALE DESCENDANT!

well, i mean i'm gonna send my mighty cavalry led by a captain to kick the hell out of some muslims somewhere and adopt whoever rises from that and lose the useful blood traits in 20 turns or so. seriously, who designed the (hardcoded?) way the game handles families?
'oh this guy has 5 cities and 4 unmarried girls. he doesn't need a son.'

I agree that the way the game handles families can be a bit screwy sometimes. Anyways, I just started a new campaign and I'm going to try to be a little bit more aggressive in capturing the surrounding rebel settlements and see if that helps .
also on an unrelated note, has anyone else noticed that the rebel general unit cards look like the peasant unit cards or is it just me?

The bodyguard in A~something is gone, "rebel general unit cards look like the peasant unit cards" isn't (yet). You should kill those guys and not look at the bodyguards

weird, i'm running ftt but after 3 heroic victories im still not getting an adoption from a captain. wth???
