But i am confident i'd be fine, well i might get a few burns from the now really hot chainmail...so yeah i'd need more than 10 bucks actually.

nope... you would be electrocuted 'cause you are touching the mail... the metal cage trick only works of you aren't touching the metal at all... the cage also needs to be connected to the ground so that the electricity can flow undisturbed through the ground... if not, it will take the shortest way through air and then to another conduit (a.k.a. you)....

The metal never touched your body anyway, since you wore padding under it. Metal conducts electricity better than the body, so the lightning would be channeled into the ground. Ideally, you would be wearing a full, continuous suit.
