but I KILLED your elephants! I killed them! How can you have them all?! Ok maybe a few were nursed back to health after I lost the battle, maybe you pulled the 47 javelins out of one of them and it survived... but all 36?! Does Phyrrus have a necromancer in his retinue?! double-u tee eff

My monster skirmisher ambush was for naught.

Not really, I've altered battlesurgery traits in Med 2 as part of a general approach, but I've never seen a unit get wiped then "resurrect". Maybe in the chaos a few routed and were not killed, still the entire unit totally untouched after such a pasting is nothing I've ever seen before in victory.

Actually, not exactly, Carados. I've noticed that missile casualties outside of combat seem to recover quickest. How is it done?

It typically works on a factor of time. Those suffered at the start of a battle recover the most units.

This isn't always true, sometimes if a unit is killed to a man - the whole unit is lost (but I have seen instances where 90%+ of the unit has recovered despite being entirely decimated by the enemy. ).

Which is why missile units tend to recover the most casualties - they get attacked first simply through virtue of being at the front of the battleline. Computer elephants also have a tendacy to full recover, taking complete advantage of the human players cunning to try and "assassinate" the elephants early on

And guess what? These cavalry units I mentioned before, they tend to be very expensive cavalry that I prefer to kill off by having them charge straight into the middle of the enemy army at the start of the battle. I no longer send these expensive cavalry head long into the enemy anymore until later on in the battle

Very informative thanks. I've decided to take a Gaius Terentius Varro approach and just SPAM the Epirotes with everything I can muster. You were born to die lads, UP AND AT THEM.

It's determined purely by time a casualty is suffered. If you have healing retinue, half to marginally less than half the casualties will be recovered, counting forward from the first man is down, and so on. If you lose a few men from a prized unit at the beginning of the battle, throw your skirmishing cannon fodder into the melee, and cackle as each dead skirmisher means the revival of an elite soldier in some sort of necromantic exchange. AFAICS the percentage number for each retinue member doesn't matter, as the game seems to just check if there is a healling ancillary, not how powerful or how many they are.

    (nvm confused regarding versions)

Just a quick edit to say, this is an awesome mod, can't believe I didn't get into it earlier. I will be playing this and extended greek mod for a long time to come

I've had that too, and it's actually quiet annoying... I did everything I could to at least get the eles killed before my army was slaughtered. But then they were all back again, but my army wasn't

Next time simply win the battle:

I anchored my flank with the woods, and used cavalry and skirmishers to try to lure the eles over to my left flank - nothing doing, so I had to wheel my second and third line around while my hestati got creamed terentian jav-cav sprung my ambush early but eventually killed the eles in the giant chaotic mess the battle turned into.

If I were to do it again I'd deploy high up the hill i nthe clearing with the ambush on my right flank in loose formation.
