e.g. standard hopilites switching from overhead spears to swords

Alt+click... Just like archers...
Standard hoplites don't have secondary weapons though.
Maybe he's talking about phalanxes and mixed it up? In that case, i don't think you can do it either, but turning their phalanx formation off usually makes them bring out the swords.
no i don't mean the reformed phalaxes. i thought the regular dudes has 2 weapons like calvery do. Im sure iv seen one unit switch to swords before...
To the poster of this thread:
If you wish for any non-phalanx-mode unit to use its secondary weapon, assuming it has one, simply hold the ALT button while right-clicking on the enemy unit. If you wish to use a phalanx-mode unit's secondary weapon, simply turn the phalanx mode off and right-click as you would normally. This is because when phalanx mode is on, the unit cannot switch to its secondary weapon. If you see any stray soldiers within units using secondary weapons while the majority of the unit uses the primary weapon, it is because they fell and stood up again, or in the case of a phalanx, are being attacked from the flanks or the rear.

Thanks very much. Pretty useful when they are armed with axes as well. Not sure whats the benefit when they have swords though
