    Alt+click... Just like archers...

Standard hoplites don't have secondary weapons though.

Maybe he's talking about phalanxes and mixed it up? In that case, i don't think you can do it either, but turning their phalanx formation off usually makes them bring out the swords.

In that case, turn off the phalanx formation and alt+click (though when they fall and stand up again the soldier will switch back to his pike IIRC.

To the poster of this thread:

If you wish for any non-phalanx-mode unit to use its secondary weapon, assuming it has one, simply hold the ALT button while right-clicking on the enemy unit. If you wish to use a phalanx-mode unit's secondary weapon, simply turn the phalanx mode off and right-click as you would normally. This is because when phalanx mode is on, the unit cannot switch to its secondary weapon. If you see any stray soldiers within units using secondary weapons while the majority of the unit uses the primary weapon, it is because they fell and stood up again, or in the case of a phalanx, are being attacked from the flanks or the rear.

Swords are better vs unarmoured or lightly armoured units.

That's right my fellow editor. Swords usually have a higher attack value, more likely to strike at their target. Axes may not strike their target as often, but once they do, they pierce and are more lethal.
