    Default Progressive Rock

Over the past couple of years I have started to listen to more progressive rock, mostly bands that are more "popular" or so like Genesis, Pink Floyd, Rush, Dream Theater, and even though I doubt it counts Iron Maidens recent albums which I like are pretty much progressive rock. What are some other good bands in this genre that I should look out for?

You might also want to check out some foreign prog rock (Italian, Spanish). I suggest Le Orme, and Premiata Forneria Marconi (for Italian), and Triana (for Spanish)

Tool is often counted under the prog-rock label (though this is under debate by more hardcore fans), and personally one of my favorite bands. But I can understand how they're not for everyone.

Porcupine Tree is an incredible band, definitely check them out. Stupid Dream and Lightbulb Sun are my favorite albums but most people might tell you to start with In Absentia. Deadwing is really good, Fear of a Blank Planet is solid and their newest one is good too. I haven't delved too much into their older stuff but it's still good PT material from what I've heard, they have some awesome EP's as well.

Their drummer (Gavin Harrison) is also my favorite drummer ever and immensely talented, which is kind of odd that I think about it considering my two favorite albums feature their older drummer, Chris Maitland. Anyways, the whole band is awesome. Steven Wilson, the main man writes consistently awesome lyrics, riffs and guitar solos (Shesmovedon and The Sound of Muzak tie for my favorite guitar solo), and in addition to writing some awesome bass lines, Colin Edwin looks like the happiest man to play a bass ever. Don't know too much about keyboards, but their keyboardist certainly adds to the atmosphere.

    tl;dr listen to Porcupine Tree

I'm sure you already know, but Muse's older stuff can still be classified as New Prog Rock, and it's a bajillion times better than their new music. Or Just stick to DSotM, which I could literally listen to for the rest of my life

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Yes. Probably my all time favorite band. Absolutely everyone that has ever been in Yes has been a musical genius.

EDIT: Sorry, you were asking for less popular Prog bands, Yes is pretty much one of the most famous, you probably already know them. I should read more carefully
Kind of related to Yes, but Chris Squire's solo work is often neglected but is just as good in my opinion.

Arto wins. I dunno why I didn't post any Kingston Wall myself. A kinda similar (but instrumental) prog band I really like at the moment:

Whatever God suggests in prog rock, I'll put my signature there as well. I got to watch Porcupine Tree live this July again. In my opinion, Wilson is one of the greatest musicians of his age.
King Crimson is a must, for sure.
Also, many people just seem to miss the beauty of the simplicity in Rush.

What is it with Italians and progressive music? It's still alive down there apparently, and relatlively lesser known bands like Van Der Graaf Generator are popular there, or so I've heard.

    Porcupine Tree
Funny enough is that I saw them 2 weeks ago or so in Vegas and I thought they were good. I just didn't mention them because I didn't know they a following, lol. Never heard of them before that concert and don't have any of their albums yet.

Tool is often counted under the prog-rock label (though this is under debate by more hardcore fans), and personally one of my favorite bands. But I can understand how they're not for everyone.
IDK if Tool is progressive rock but I have liked them since High School.

They were touring with Coheed and Cambria. Check to see if that tour is coming near you, the tickets were reasonable.

Its funny because I work with someone who likes Coheed and Cambria, a band i kind of like, and I always go to a show when I get the chance to go with a group regardless of the band and they were touring together. I only started to do this recently and its turning out to be an awesome way to find good music.

You should try listening to Gentle Giant as well, though you may hate them on your first (and second) listen, as I did.

    Caravan is also good too.
