    Default Worgogez and Gestatae

I`m very interested in ancient history; And of late i took a special interest in those two units. I wonder whether someone could recommend me some texts about them?

If it helps, those texts can be in english, german or latin. (I need some more latin practice anyway!)

On the Gaesatae, Polybius describes some celtic armies at the Battle of Talamon against the Romans in 225 B.C:

''The Insubres and the Boii wore trousers and light cloaks, but the Gaesatae, in their love of glory and defiant spirit, had thrown off their garments and taken up their position in front of the whole army naked and wearing nothing but their arms... The appearance of these naked warriors was a terrifying spectacle, for they were all men of splendid physique and in the prime of life.''

    Polybius, Histories II.28

I'm also pretty sure that Julius Caesar describes similar occurences in his Gallic Wars, a good 180+ years later.

As for the Worgozes, I had never heard of them.

Terry Jones' Barbarians 2nd on the list and listed as HIGHLY RECCOMENDED!!!???

Thats not only outrageous but disheartening. I get the need to study and understand the enemies of Rome and other 'civilized' peoples through other means than Roman propaganda, and I think EB does a great job as setting the record straight, but Terry Jones' barbarians is rubbish. It becomes just as extreme as the 'narrow minded historical perceptions' it aims to counter, only in the other direction.

Honestly, start of the book, and I quote ''The Roman Empire threw humanity back 1500 years'' - nuff said.

All those massive civil wars, personal armies and explorational monopolical elites didn't help humanity at all.

Not to say that the Roman Empire didn't do it's wonders to the world, but they also destroyed a lot of things.

They did however build roads across all of Europe, including Britain. Then the British build railroads scaled according to these roads, then the British built similar railroads in America and NASA used these to transport shuttle components. In the end, everything that goes in space from USA is scaled according to the breadth of Roman horse's ass.
