Play a E\E if new to this game otherwise if familiar with vanilla then try SS with H\M.

You need to have balls of steel to play the campaign on VH. Or you just need to know how the game works inside-out.

VH/VH isn't all that hard. Depends a lot on which faction you're playing as, though, and which AI you're using.

I play campaign VH and battles H, although I've played SS for a few years now so I know how "most" things work!

VH/VH with Lithuania and Savage AI is pretty easy. It's just a matter of start (you must expand quickly) and luck (you mustn't get crusades called on Vilnius or Riga at the beginning).
I think it should be harder with Gracul AI though...

Try Byzantines as M/M. It is pretty hard for me. Since I enabled Permanent Arrows, the battles with Turks are quite laggy as they use so much missile units. And so, I can't micro-manage them much, when I take care of one flank, the other flank just get charged by enemy cavalry.

The 6.3 battle AI had extreme bonuses and rights. The developers seemed to be protesters for the AI rights!!
Also the access of planting stakes in the middle of a battle for AI is just a madness. I am wondering if I can remove it. But no sure what file to edit.

Currently, a jihad had been called against me to the City of Constantinople led by the Turks, for I took 2 bordering Turkish forts coz, they blockaded 3 ports declaring war on me. Now Khwarezmians sent 3 full stacks, the Turks 1 stack, the Fatamids 4/3 stack, the Alamovarids 3/4 stack. So roughly 6-7 stacks against me. Damn jihads!! I had destroyed 4 stacks, one from each Muslim factions. 2 full stack Khwarezmians are at my gates. I wonder what VH/VH for Romans will be Total Madness. I am sure I would get my ass kicked off and my computer blown up playing VH/Vh with Roman Emp or CS!!

Turn em off. Graphics isn't worth it if it ruins your gameplay

Anyway I played VH/H from the very beginning. If you want to learn fast then you will have to lose sometimes. I didn't lose though because I read all about the new game play and features at the home page of SS.

I think SS has been pretty easy for me using England, HRE and Byzantine. I'm not using any hardcore submods yet though. Hope this helped

If you played many Total War games then VH is not so bad. I played TW since Shogun off and on though I didn't really get into it deeply until MTW2 mods came out. I don't remember the difficulty levels in Shogun, I just remember only the first few regions were difficult then once had the gold to produce better units the game was basically over. RTW I think I played H-H at first then did VH-VH and in some mods with extremely crowded maps I did H-VH just because it gets boring fighting 10 battles every turn versus almost identical armies.

I never play battles less than VH... AI simply collapse too fast otherwise. Every once in awhile I will play a H-VH just to roleplay something specific but I usually get bored of those campaigns quite fast when it seems there is little action going on. Once you get used to the more frequent AI armies on VH for some factions its quite lonely not to see them every other turn.

As well in early campaign I believe VH is often easier than just H. On VH AI Kingdoms expand faster and attack nearby rebels often weakening them for your own armies to win cheap victory. As well the more frequent invasions can give more ransom money and good traits to your generals which for human player is more of a snowball effect. Playing on H and giving the AI plenty of time to build up can be satisfying for a few factions.

I'm playing as the Roman Empire on VH/VH
I allied the Seljuk Sultanate almost immediately, though, but I have plenty going on to the west and north.

Play VH/VH with Gracul AI. Then this game will finally live up to its "Total War" name.

I do wonder, does even the Pope get all crazy on Gracul? Because he attacked me suddenly (had about 5* on the meter with him). It never even occurred to me that the pope would do that (he hadn't excommunicated me before the attack). I always expected the pope would sit around and at most decide to excommunicate me at 0 crosses or after I broke a ceasefire he demanded.

Playing on VH/H with the savage AI atm. But I'm really getting my ass on some campaigns (mainly CS and TO). Guess I'll might go for H/H some time soon.

Byzzies, early campaign, if find H/H too easy, because turks are not such a threat, venice only fields urban spears, and you rack 10k+ income from the beggining, and you can get 20k+ income in 20-25 turns
