    Default Amazon Kindle 3

Anyone considering buying one? I've always been interested by e-book readers, and finally the price has dropped to a point that I consider reasonable, at $140. It would be even more reasonable at $100, they could even drop the wifi, but still 140's pretty good.

I prefer reading real books. I much prefer the touch of the paper, and it doesn't hurt my eyes as much. I like, after having read them, put them on my shelves.

And I think, like the others, the iPad is better. It has more uses.

I totally agree. Nothing replaces a real book. Especially a nice hardback in leather.

An Ipad uses a backlit screen, not e-ink. It's harder on your eyes, while a Kindle is like reading a book. An Ipad is also more than 3 times the price.

If I wanted something with a lot of uses I would get a nice netbook instead of an ipad anyway.

I have a version 2 kindle. I love it. Thought I do wish I hadn't adopted so soon as the Kindle 3 looks sexy. An ipad is also good, but if you are just gonna get one for the ebooks its a waste.

Also this leather cover with integrated LED lights (draw power from the kindle so no battery required) is really nice, but at $60 it seems kind of pricey.

I might end up getting it anyway, I don't know.

I just don't understand what is wrong with real books. It seems to me that these e-readers are intent fixing a problem that isn't there.

why would you think that there should be a problem for the existence of different things?

for me there is absolutely nothing wrong with juices, but why people have to drink soda, or coke? they are similar yet people like to drink different things.

there is audio books, why oh why?

    see there is no consistency.

For me it would be good because I have a lot of digital books, since poor student and books aficionado, prefers to spend its hard earned money in edition that are rare and difficult to find.

Chill out man, I never said they shouldn't exist. I just said I didn't see the point of them and was rather hoping someone could explain it to me.

Anyway, none of your examples are valid. For example, people might like soda because it tastes different to coke? A blind person might like audio books because they can't read normal books? Or someone might prefer to listen to a story than read it?

I don't fully understand your last point, but I would think that you aren't that likely to find rare books on amazon-download or whatever the downloader is called. I read somewhere that amazon are still struggling to update their library which was seen as inadequate at launch (this was from some review or something).

The only benefit I can see of this expensive gadget is that you can have many books with you in your bag. But even that doesn't make sense to me, because with books you usually read them one at a time and so don't need to be able to store hundreds on one device.

You should do like the rest of us and get yourself real books then

I wonder if it'll hurt your eyes if you read on it after a while.

Having said that, I wouldn't mind having one myself.

It's much easier on your eyes than a computer screen.

It's e-ink, not backlit. I've seen it in person and it looks good, I can't say for sure whther it will hurt your eyes but it doesn't seem like it would.

It doesn't, its a very easy read. I've read a kindle literally for HOURS on end. I've never regretted getting one. It stores thousands of books, amazon even keeps a library online for you. Instant delivery of any book (I recently was able to get the day it was released. Something near impossible to do if I had wanted to get the hardcover.). You won't regret getting it all.

Got it in the mail today.

This thing is freaking sweet. Totally worth the money (although I still don't think previous generations were worth it). I ordered it with no case, but it seems/looks pretty fragile, so I'm ordering the brown lighted leather case and I'll just be careful with it in the couple weeks it takes for free shipping.

In case anyone cares, manga works well with it using this program http://foosoft.net/mangle/ as long as the text is large. Sometimes in fan translations they use tiny fonts and I think it would probably make it hard to read on the small screen of a kindle.

And Calibre is incredible, I didn't have to do any setup or anything, it just detected the kindle and sent the books I wanted. The news delivery feature in calibre is awesome too, at least with the sites I've tried so far (Sports Illustrated, The Onion, and the News & Observer).

The collections feature is cool but I wish you could do it on your PC instead of just on the Kindle, it takes a while to put a bunch of books into a collection.

The web browser is neat but totally sucks
