    Default RTW: Original / Vanilla

I've tried to locate versions of RTR that are compatible with the original version of the game. That is, not BI or Alexander. A week or so ago I thought I had it figured out. Downloaded patch 1.2 and then RTR6 (I think) for my version of Rome. Needless to say, it didn't work. After several tries I got frustrated and gave up.

Long story short: I need links to the appropriate patches of RTW and versions of RTR, because apparently I'm not too bright. Thanks in advance.

If you want to play RTR using the RTW 1.2 patch, you must use RTR Gold. However, you can always upgrade your RTW to 1.5 and use RTR Platinum, which is basically RTR Gold but is compatible with the 1.5 patch. RTR Platinum is also available in the Mod Switch version, which still lets you play the original game because it doesn't overwrite any of the vanilla game files. You'll find all the links in the Download and Mod Index. Link is below.

Tried this again. DLed and installed patch, no problem. Dled RTR Gold, ran the install program without any problems. Rebooted just in case. Fire up RTW.....and its still vanilla. No idea what I'm doing wrong.

Edit: All on a clean install by the way.

Why not upgrade to 1.5 and install RTR Platinum?

Do you have windows Vista or 7 with UAC on? If so, that could be the issue why you're not getting to see the mod

Alternatively, he`s not installing it in the right place. RTR installs by default in an Activision folder, while newer versions of the game install by default in a The Creative Assembly folder(they`ve changed it since Sega took over). If your game is in the latter category and you`re not directing the installer properly there`s the chance of installing in a folder where you don`t have the game and when you click the desktop shortcut it will tell you it can`t locate the executable and offer to search it for your. If you`ve allowed it to it will have located it in the other folder, where the game is. Thus starting the vanilla game.

It does sound like you've installed to the wrong place. As florin80 has posted the change in default location from 'Activision' to 'The Creative Assembly' is one of the easier mistakes to make.

Also, make sure that you point the installer to the 'game' folder and not the 'data' folder. The game folder is where the exes can be found. This is an example of a 'game' folder:
