dismounted huscarl, especially after factoring in avalibility. most of the Viking line units are extremely price effective infantry, too bad their supporting roster in the early era suck

still, if we're simplying talking about ablity to hack things apart in melee, nothing in the early era beats Byzantium generals
1180, an unprecedented period of peace and prosperity in East Asia, it's technology and wealth is the envy of the world. But soon conflict will engulf the entire region with great consequences and lasting effects for centuries to come, not just for this region, but the entire known world, when one man, one people, unites.....

I agree... with the high unit numbers and availability and with good upgrades and XP for cost they are hard to beat.

Hmm- for some reason I read the OP as asking best melee foot troops but best infantry overall? I like Almaughvars due to the flexibility of the unit, javelins, good melee, decent armour.

BTW- wasn't there a thread like this very recently?

If you haven't noticed, there is a recent similar thread to 80% of threads in SS forum

Playing as Aragon, for the early game (early campaign as well) my infantry has been nothing but Javelins.

They definitely aren't far from the best, seeing as how enough of them can take out a whole unit in one volley... they are amazing, and they can handle their own in Melee with some support, and just to add that javelins pierce armor, making them all the more deadly against Feudal Knights and troops of that ilk.

And they are cheap and easily available. Don't need a Fortress or Citadel to get them. The time it takes to get 1 CK or Norman there would be 5x minimum Almaughavars. I'll have to test them in some 1 v 1 situations. Foot knights should usually win but I bet they take more losses than expected compared to some of these other test scenarios.

Yep, Scutatoi or Dismounted Sicilio-Norman FK. Well really, we don't see the extremes of armor differences in early era, heavy mail is maximum, so pretty much any unit is vulnerable to any other unit. Are Huskarl Axemen (2H) available? I can't remember, they are lethal.

I think they are high era maybe? You can recruit saxon huscarls and galloichs tho in early era as mercs... they are brutes I'm talking about recruitable non-merc non-missile infantry tho, sorry jav guys

Yeah the Dismounted Lazarus Knights will be beastly, try them against the Normans.....

I think the Normans win with no armor upgrades, and the Lazarus Knights will win when fully upgraded....at work so I can't test it now.

So for early era Norman foot knights FTW?
