    Default Historical Battles

Bet this will create some interest

I'm playing around with the historical battles in between the mountain of EDUing, DMBing and all that malarky

I want the esteemed members of the ExRM community to provide me with ideas of how best to represent these battles

Note, that adding (or removing) unit numbers will be tricky because it would require playing around with co-ordinates and stuff, therefore I would like to keep the number of units the same if at all possible.

    Why?

Here's an example of unit coordinates:
    Code:
    unit 0, 274.139, 218.039, -90, formation_type square, formation_width 30.794
red 1: the unit in question
    blue 1: it's x, y coordinates
    red 2: rotation
    blue 2: formation type
red 3: width of the formation

Especially the last bit is interesting... The width of the unit is fixed. So if you increase or reduce the number of units, that will only mean it will get more or less rows in the formation.

So only if you want to fix the formation depth at 4 lines or something it is a problem. But otherwise not...

(you could try replacing it with "formation_depth nnn" though... Maybe it'll work...?)

Because no one explained it to me, and I hadn't looked at a tutorial yet
This will help a lot though, thanks pat

    Does show_cursorstat work properly?
I've been wanting to extend the Roman line in Teutoburg Forest, but the co-ordinates in the files and the co-ordinates I get with show_cursorstat seem to be different?

You should use the battle editor! (add -enable_editor to the shortcut and start it via the options menu)

Here's a great tutorial by Bardo: Making Historical Battles
I would also advice to read the official info to which he included a link in the preview. The top part has a step by step guide on how to get these battles to work.

and yes, the show_cursorstat command should work

Raphia, Magnesia, Ipsus, Thermopylae (Greeks vs Galatians = awesome) - could also try setting a similar thing up for the campaign like the Rome vs Epirus battle?

Carrhae would be nice, teach you Roman dogs a lesson.

Châlons would also be interesting, have the Romans and co. fight in a very non-Romanesque fashion against the Huns. You could feature all kinds of troop types in that battle, which could make it challenging for all players.

Teutoberg forest or something like that? (not sure if ExRM has the required units for that though )

We already have the vanilla versions. I intend to modify those a little bit and work my way up to Cannae

(not sure if ExRM has the required units for that though )
We'll only go as far as the Marian legions. So if they wore the lorica segmentata then... well, they won't in ExRM

Gergovia, Alesia, Telamon, Cenoscephalae (or something remotely similar ), Pydna, ... etc ...

Of course, that's a bit Rome-centric. Some between the Successors could be good (you could even have stuff like the Battle of Paraitakene and Gabiene (which are decently documented I think) between Eumenes and Antigonos, putting Antigonos as Macedon and Eumenes as the Seleucids. Not exactly accurate, but it would be cool to have battles like that). And perhaps some in Iberia...

Of course, this is going a bit overboard. But there are plenty of battles out there which you can do

I say the more we can do the better, it'll be good for those players who don't necessarily want the mod for the campaign (even though that's the main selling point).

Another vote for Ipsus, it was a major battle of the Diadochi kingdoms. It is slightly before ExRM's timeframe though. The same goes for the battle of Issus.
