Icon5 Can someone explain why the Sicilian Pope was elected?

Sorry I can't do a SS because my Vista sucks and programs randomly stop working until I reboot (like Firefox, Word, Notepad, Paint, etc) but anyway here were the Papal Election results:

Niccolo the Missionary (Sicily): 3 Sicilian votes, 1 Portugeese vote, 1 Hungarian vote=5 votes

Pons the Warmonger (French): 4 French votes, 1 Castiallian vote=5 votes

Thomas the Missionary: 4 HRE votes, 1 Papal States vote, 1 Venetian vote=6 votes

And yet somehow Niccolo the Sicilian Pope won?

too bad, a screenshot might have helped...

the cardinal Thomas, was he HRE? and was HRE excommunicated? that might have been an issue... although, I have never encountered this myself....

The weird this is HRE WAS excommunicated about 20 turns ago, although they were since redeemed when I killed their faction leader about 10 turns ago...still, their papal favor should have been very low and yet they kept getting more Cardinals as soon as they were reconciled...I was shocked they had 4 Cardinals, but still, they won fair and square and were not excommunicated at the time of the election...or even 10 turns before it...of course HRE is also my ally and Sicily is my enemy...go figure.

Sicily has their King and a second stack standing outside Anacona AND they have the Pope's backing...this is going to get ugly real fast.

I had this problem in Grand Campaign mod. It turns out that the winner had more allies vote for him. Did this happen to you?

As in, I should have won because I had more votes, but the faction that got it had more of his allies vote for him than my allies voted for me.

And how many of Sicily's allies voted for him? If more than 1, that explains it.

Actually the cardinals from one country have a sum of one vote. So it was actually a tie between niccolo and thomas which I cant say why niccolo got it. probably better relations.
Oh, for Heaven's sake, now you're being deliberately stupid.

Where did you get this info?

You havent seen this happen before? A cardinal with the vast majority of votes gets beat by someone with fewer votes spread out between more factions. What else could it be?

the alliance factor. I've won almost every election when all the votes I had were from my cardinals. The only time I lost was when the opponent had his allies voting for him.

This is a topic you posted in KGCM forum. Look at your screenshot. One vote for poland, 5 votes from 4 factions to the venetian cardinal and 7 votes from 2 factions fot the spanish cardinal.

    Poland 1 vote
    Venice 4 votes <--- Winner
    Spain 2 votes

I have never seen it happen any other way than cardinal with the most factions support.

After Peteriscoolz mentioned the alliance thing, I went and checked. Venice had two allies vote for him, I was not allied with Spain. He won.

    Like I said before,

You positive the alliances werent just a coincidence? All things being equal the simplest explanation is the likely the right explanation. Do you have a ss showing a cardinal with fewer factions voting for him, but more allies and won? That seems a bit complicated for a video game.

No, never had a reason to take a ss of something that happens all the time. I also modded out the Popes special powers in my current campaign, so no papal elections...so I can't test the theory.

    This supports your theory

    http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=261652

but there is no mention of alliances, so who knows
