Unchangeable Resolution (Medieval Total War Gold)

Basically I upgraded to Win7 64 bit the other day (as i had 4gb of RAM and wanted it to be fully utilised), and reinstalled all my files and drivers and games etc, including Medieval 1. Basically the game loads up fine, but when I try to change the resolution for the campaign and battlemap the res wont change at all. Its stuck at 800x600 and 640xsomething respectively and moving the slider does nothing.

maybe the gmae is so old that it does not support newer resolutions?

I dont think so lol. Can it have something to do with the graphics card or even the amount of RAM installed on the computer?

This is the only way? Going back and forth rebooting and changing these values?
