Shieldless cav

Hi
How are you supposed to use those advanced armour cav like gothics and lancers in kingdoms. They were all right in vanilla but now their defense sucks so they die in melee. Their attack and charge is the same as other elite cav like chivalrics and knightly orders so the have no advantage over them. What do you do with them.
Advice for single player and multiplayer would be helpful.

Stay away from them. Lancers, Famiglia Ducale and especially Gendarmes aren't worth the money. Gothic Knights have AP maces so they are waaaaay better than Lancers... Yet not as good as all the other German AP cavalry..

So, as the HRE would it be better to use imperial knights or gothics?

Imperials and/or Teutonics. Yet, if you see French lancers, and you only have your unit of Gothic knights, you shouldn't worry too much.
