Default Odysseus palace found in Ithaca?!?!??!

    Surprised nobody posted this yet

Greek archaeologists have claimed they have found the palace of Odysseus during excavations on the Ithaca island in the Ionian Sea.
On Tuesday, the archaeologist, Thanasis Papadopulos, who has been leading the excavation team on Odysseus' home island for 16 years, said that he knew the right place of the remains since 2006.
“We found the ruins of a three-level palace with a staircase carved into the rock,” Papadopulos said, adding that they also found a well, dating back to 13th century BC, when the Trojan War is believed to have taken place.
According to the archaeologist, the discoveries are identical to the ones described in Homer's Odyssey, presumably written about 8th century BC.
The Greek Ministry of Culture has provided more funding for the continuation of the excavations.
The mayor of Ithaca, Spiros Arsenis, has stated that Papadopulos' discovery is easily one of the most important discoveries in modern archeology, as reported by the Russian news agency RIA Novosti.

    More coverage soon

Greeks 'discover Odysseus' palace in Ithaca, proving Homer's hero was real'

An 8th BC century palace which Greek archaeologists claim was the home of Odysseus has been discovered in Ithaca, fuelling theories that the hero of Homer's epic poem was real.

Odysseus is tempted by the Sirens on his journey back to Ithaca

Odysseus – known to the ancient Romans as Ulysses – famously took 10 years to return home to Ithaca after the fall of Troy.

On his journey, he was twice shipwrecked and encountered a cyclops, the spirit of his mother and tempting Sirens before returning to Ithaca, where he found his wife, Penelope, under pressure to remarry from a host of suitors who had invaded the royal palace.

With the help of his father, Laertes, and his son, Telemachus, he slaughtered his rivals and re-established his rule.
But despite the fantastical details in the Greek epic, a team of archaeologists has claimed the tale is anchored in truth - and that they have discovered his home on the island of Ithaca, in the Ionian sea off the north-west coast of Greece.
Nearly 3,000 years after Odysseus returned from his journey, the team from the University of Ioannina said they found the remains of an extensive three-storey building, with steps carved out of rock and fragments of pottery. The complex also features and a well from the 8th century BC, roughly the period in which Odysseus is believed to have been king of Ithaca.
The location "fits like a glove" with Homer's description of the view from the fabled palace, the archaeologists claim.
The layout of the complex, where Professor Thanassis Papadopoulos and his team have been digging for 16 years, is very similar to palaces discovered at Mycenae, Pylos and other ancient sites.
The claim will be greeted with scepticism by the many scholars who believe that Odysseus, along with other key characters from the Homer's epic such as Hector and Achilles, were purely fictional.
"Whether this find has a connection with Ulysses or not is interesting up to a certain point, but more important is the discovery of the royal palace," said Adriano La Regina, an Italian archaeologist.
Further complicating the identification of the site is the doubt over whether the ancient kingdom of Ithaca was located on its modern day namesake, Ithaki.
A British researcher, Robert Bittlestone, has said Homer's descriptions bear little resemblance to the island and that ancient Ithaca was in fact located on the Paliki peninsula, on the island of Cephalonia.
He believes that Paliki was once an island, separated from the rest of Cephalonia by a marine channel that has since been filled in by rock falls triggered by earthquakes.
Enlisting the help of geologists and ancient historians, he documented the controversial theory in a 2005 book, Odysseus Unbound – The Search for Homer's Ithaca.

Interesting... I'd be curious what they used to identify it. Perhaps as being the biggest palace in Mycenean Ithaca I suppose.

Basically the palace has the same identical layout of the ones in Mycene, Pylos, Pellana and Tiryns of the same period. Also, they have found some Mycenean era porcelains dated 1300 BC close to some stairs carved on stone, era in which Odysseus has lived according to archaeologists. Papadopoulos and Lolos recently (time ago) in the area have unearthed a tablet in which a scene linked to Odyssey is represented... Odysseus chained to the shipmast resisting against the chant of sirens.

Emanuele Greco, the director of Italian archaeological school in Athens said that actually, there are also two other contemporary excavations in Greece on the traces of ancient Odyssey heroes: one in Salamis where in 2006 professor Lolos identified a palace in which it is thought Ajax lived and he thinks having identified on the same island, a sort of big monument dedicated to the same hero... in the other hand we have in Sparta, a huge structure who has been found full of paintings and decorations, archaeologists are of the idea building was of regal dignity.. maybe Menelaus, with many tablest unearthed too written in linear b, a script used in the Mycenean era

So they found a palace and automatically claimed it belonged to Odysseus? I find that a little far-fetched. But on the other hand: cool! Another ancient Greek palace!

Rather nonsensical to claim it was "Odysseus'" place, but an interesting discovery for a generally obscure and intriguing period.
"Romans not only easily conquered those who fought by cutting, but mocked them too. For the cut, even delivered with force, frequently does not kill, when the vital parts are protected by equipment and bone. On the contrary, a point brought to bear is fatal at two inches; for it is necessary that whatever vital parts it penetrates, it is immersed. Next, when a cut is delivered, the right arm and flank are exposed. However, the point is delivered with the cover of the body and wounds the enemy before he sees it."

Well.. all archaeological indications seem showing some kind of linkage with Odysseus but it's early to pronounce a sentence about this. Maybe it could be just a Mycenean structure having nothing to do with the ancient hero as i suspect

Naming a great archaeological finding as "Ulysses's palace" is like doing a great job on advertising.....
I hope that the archaeologists will clarify their theory with a detailed adress later on.....
