Default Getting a new pc, need advise.

Hi guys, Mr MM helped me some months ago by picking out some parts for upgrading my computer and stuff. I learned a lot from him, so thanks man!

Anyways, I'm getting a new computer and I was thinking of getting the following hardware combined with Windows 7 64-bit:
    -Asus P755D Motherboard
    -Intel Core i7-870 cpu
    -Saphire HD 5850 TOXIC
    -4 gigs or more ram
-Western Digital WD15EARS 2 gig Harddrive
    -Obviously a power supply

That kinda says it, but I need some advice:
-Can someone recommend me some ram I should buy? How much should I buy?
-Should I get a 700 watt powr supply or more?
-Are my chosen motherboard, gpu and cpu good choices for me?

My goal: having a nice high end (not extremely) computer for the coming 3 years.

    Thank in advance!

    why the i7 870?

and only buy the 700w psu if you want to go the xfire route, if not, there is no need. The 650w corsair is a good buy, any model will do.

for the ram I would go for the http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231193

now for the HD that is a problem, its not a fast HD, try the samsung spinpoint f3 1tb drive, or the WD caviar black 1tb drive (with sata III)

now for the motherboard, try to get the model with the SATA III and the USB 3.0

As My MM has sort of implied the Core i7 870 is an odd choice considering you can get the same performance from cheaper the Core i5 760 with a tiny bit of overclocking. Besides not that you would have to do that because most games can't use 4 cores which means the turbo boost will overclock the remaining cores for you automatically.

The motherboard is a good choice, ASUS has excellent USB 3.0 performance and normally reliable as for the PSU you don't need any more then 500 watts to be honest but if you plan to crossfire latter on it's worth getting a decent 750/800 watt PSU. If you don't plan on upgrading but want to plan ahead for future upgrades a quality 600 watt will suit you down to the ground. You might also want to consider a modular design for easier cable management which leads to finish by saying make sure you get a decent case.

4GB of the G.Skill RAM that Mr. MM suggested is good.

A good sturdy 600W PSU or 650W would do you fine. Something like this one would be good:
    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16817371015

The Sapphire 5850 Toxic is an excellent choice. Most ASUS motherboards are good and the one you picked is a quality board. The i7 is a bit of a strange choice as MM said.

i would go for 8gigs, at least 4gigs can be used for Shared Memory to the GPU (might come in handy for STW2)

Also have you thought about a small 80gig SSD for games Only.

Air Cooled and Beginners to Ocing

Disable Turbo Boost. Set the Memory to extreme (if your memory is good enough) and increase the CPU Volt by +0.1 , Set the BLCK to 166 (3.6Ghz +/- Per Logical Processor (X8) 166X22)

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:
    My I7 860 is @ 160(133 stock)X22=3.5Ghz +/- Per Logical Processor (stable and cool)

If you get the memory that MM suggests, maybe you could increase the Blck from 166 to 190-200 (for future Ocing.)

Best to check memory Specs First.

(sorry for grammar its getting late and all that)

If gaming is the only priority then there is no need for SSDs coz they are ridiculously expensive.
The role of HDD in gaming is just faster loading of games which the Modern 7200rpm Hdds are well capable of.

Little Article for you Ishan, i know what you mean about the price.

    http://www.samsung.com/global/busine...ence_Rev_3.pdf

While the HDD might have better performance writing small files, The SSD will have the advantage over sustained reading.

this is were the SSD comes on top. After all Saved game Data/pagefiles/log files should be saved on the HDD to combat this issue.

Crysis (high res texture packs) will load in quicker and produce less lag/stutter over a 7200Rpm drive,
the same can be applied to TW game`s "Empire" and beyond. (dont you love the 800meg pack files)

please note this article is regarding a top of the line 10,000 RPM hard disk drive with 16Mb cache and i doubt the drive is half used, were HDD Performance Drop`s out....

    Money to burn?

For the enthusiast Putting two SDD`s on Raid 0 will boost the performance even further, and if your name is donald trump four SSD`s on Raid10 will be expensive and maybe not an option for most of us until 2020

    Conclusions

Gamers want the game to load instantly and play at maximum possible frames per second (FPS) with all features turned on. Using that as our measurement objective we found:
    • 4.4% improvement in average game loading time was obtained.
    • 6.4% improvement in frames per second was measured.
    • 33.5% improvement on one test and 58.3% on another was realized in system benchmarks.
Using a solid state drive will give the gamer the extra edge he or she is seeking

Alright, no there is none 2tb drive that is fast these days, some have a good amount of cache, but they are slower then their 1tb counterparts.

that caviar black is the fastest HD in the market (excluding the now not so good velociraptors, they are not the king of performance anymore) the samsung is a great choice being slightly cheaper.

the i7 860 is not a good bet in terms of chips, actually after the i5 750 there is no buying potential left in the LGA 1156 socket. The remaining chips are too expensive and offer little performance improvement. Seeing how its easy to OC things in those new sockets, its a waste of money.

I would wait for the 6850, its right over the corner. The launch will be in somewhat 2-3 months being available shortly after that. IF it is a good improvement well go for it. IF its not, you will get a cheaper 5850

I'm confused, is 1366 newer or 1156? I hate damn Intel and their socket system. It's made me change to AMD.

    the newer is the 1156.

actually the 1366 should be used only for server purposes, but intel wanted to kill some more of AMD, and released for mainstream consumption.

but there are some talks that the new socket is already developed, and that would be a sure stupid move.

AMD dont change the socket type as often since it uses the K10 and the now K10.5 architecture.

This is a mistake bro coz been the victim.
EARS as reckon if Caviar green it has 64 Mb of cache which is good but it doesn't run on 7200rpm 24/7. so this drive isn't fast enough.
And firther more the name of the drive is misleading WD15EARS is a 1.5 TB Drive not 2TB so be careful and check again.

    Better options:-
    • Caviar Black 64Mb Hdd
    • Samsung Spin point F3 32 Mb Cache

for OC purposes, I would go with this ram: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820227574

its slightly more expansive, but the CAS is 6-8-6-24 on this one, and the voltage is within intel good operation range (that is 1.5v and 1.65, anything higher than that...)

this mushkin is great too: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820226123

now for the SSDs there are 2 models that i recommend for now:

the Kingston SV425 for cheap storage: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820139132

and the Mushkin enhanced callisto for performance: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820226152

Yeah i have read that .pdf file
For gaming buying a SSD would be still considered stupid just to get an edge of 6-7%. No thankyou in IMO.
7200rpm Hdds are all coming with 64 mb cache nowadays which helps a lot in game loading, Quick saving, re-loading etc.
Also the loading is quite fine enough it's not like it takes a lot of time or it hangs while at it. But after the data is transfered it all upto the CPU, GPU and RAM.

Now games like M2TW and ETW will play better not on battlefield but when we click next turn the data is refreshed form the hard drive but still its not a reason to get a SSD.
If we have money why not purchase an actual component that helps in gaming like G.card etc.

I like SSDs they are cool and all but until the prices drop for it i won't buy it besides i have ran games on it no noticeable increase in fps.

Thanks for the advice so far guys!

SSD's are too overpriced for me at the moment, 100 gigs just wont cut it, ever.

I guess Ill be going for that 1TB HDD one than.

So the core i5 760 has the same performance as the i7 870? I'm not interested in overclocking since I am no tech junkie and afraid of destroying my computer .

I heard some sounds about the HD 6000 series, I can only hope ATI releases them in September, since Ill be getting a computer than =).

Out the box the 870 will be a little bit quicker (2.8ghz vs 2.93ghz) but it's not huge, just have a look at the Anandtech bench comparison and judge for yourself, they don't have the 760 listed so I used the 750 so the rests will be a bit closer so bear that in mind. BTW overclocking won't destroy you computer, I'm only talking about a few hundred Mhz's and you won't even have to increase the voltage.

Given AMD should be launching the 6000 series in October/November buying in September isn't a smart move given that prices of the 5850 and 5870 are still around at there MRSP and when the 6000 comes out prices should nose dive on older parts. Wating a month and half could save you a hundred Euros or more.
