Default Starting Positions of Factions [Some Map Proposals]

I know, you have many resources but I want to share some maps between 1080-1100, and hope these may helps you:

This map is taking from Centennia Historical Map program
1080 map of Europe, Midde East & Northern Africa:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

In this map, there aren't Anatolian Seljuks in Anatolia, but they were during 1080. Maybe they were more dependent to the Great Seljuks than their situtation during 13th century.

And this one is taking from Wikipedia
1100 map of Europe, Middle East & Northern Africa:
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

This map is more detailed about faction borders and even minor factions. Minor factions are showed by numbers on the map.

    These are from Euratlas
Europe, Middle East (except Persia) & Northern Africa
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

There are two version of 1100 map.

And if you want more detail on regional maps (e.g Spain, Anatolia, Britain), just let me know.
    What do you think?

Those are nice maps. Quick query? I see a lot of maps like that and they all have the HRE as owning pretty much all of northern italy and even southeast France in the early Medieval period. In the game factions like Milan, Genoa, Pisa, Florence, Venice, etc all have their own state/governments. What's the deal guys? Were they vassals? Or did the HRE just technically own that area, or claim to be the rightful rulers like the English kings claimed the French crown?

Thank you very much. I own Centennia myself and it's a great program. Currently, we're nearly done with the map, so it's a bit late. Perhaps we'll use your maps in the future, though.

All catholic rulers were subject to the Emperor and Pope as head of secular and church worlds respectively. When Charlemagne was crowned Emperor by Pope in 800 it was the symbol of continuity from old Western Roman Empire and new order which emerged from Migration period and Dark ages (despite the actual Roman tradition was carried on by Byzantine Empire). Soon after that the Frankish Empire which stretched from northern Iberia over France to central Europe and Italy got into civil war which ended by Treaty of Verdun in 843. This treaty divided the Empire into three parts - Center (Italy), East (German tribes, Lower Countries, Burgundy...), West (Francia) and the title of Emperor fell to the Eastern portion of the split Empire. Italian part was soon absorbed by the Eastern part thus constituting what later became HRE. Border between Francia and HRE was set roughly on Rhone, Saon, Meuse, Rhine. Title of Emperor did not entitle the wearer to any land, it granted power and authority over all of HRE directly and over all catholic world indirectly. How things were de facto at any given time however was very varying thing.

In DotS will be several systems which will hopefully simulate some of it like schism (antipope), civil war (antiking), claimed lands (though rebels when attacked by third faction it will result in either ecom or war with HRE (or other faction)). Plus several factions are affiliated (being more or less part of) with HRE: Comuni Liberi, Comuni Toscani, Venice, Papal States, Bohemia, Sicily and also factions engaging in Imperial matters though being outside of HRE: Poland, Hungary, France, Denmark.

The matter is very complicated and I would suggest google and wiki for further information :-) DotS is going to be absolutely historically accurate (to the extent the limits of the game allow) so basically anything you'll learn will be somehow represented (or explained why not) in the final release of the mod.

The 1080 map shows southern Sicily owned by the Muslims (as it should be) but how would that effect the regions within Sicily itself (if at all).
    I like parentheses.

Will the area around Amalfi / Naples be represented as a vassal or 'type IV government' region of the ERE?

Antioch should also still be in ERE hands.

    Meh.

Meh. It was de facto in hands of Armenian nobility that had sworn fealty to the Roman Empire. Around 1080 they decided that going alone was a pretty cool idea, so yeah.

How are you going to represent the relation between the Byzantine Empire and Venice (the latter technically still being a vassal of the former)?
