    Default Diplomacy Question

    Hey everyone,

I have a question. What does the AI actually require to want to sue for peace? I have completely decimated Kievan Rus, recently just defeating their faction leader and 3 armies in a single battle, they have one army left, yet they still won't accept a peace treaty.

All I ask for is Ceasefire and Trade Rights. And it's termed "Demanding". I frequently release prisoners as well. Any tips? Any tips on how to get a vassal?

    Thanks!

Depends really on few things. The diplomats/princesses traits. Higher stats means easier negotiating. Are you a different faction religion wise? Try adding money to the mix, will make a difference believe me. For vassal, I believe their last settlement HAS to be a city and you must be significantly stronger then they, which in your case is not a problem most probably. If you can't afford a single tribute, try the same amount into yearly ones so 10,000 in a single could be 2,500 in 4 turns

Not true. I'm playing early VH/VH with savage AI as Byzantines and I made the crusaders my vassals even though they had two settlements left (a stone cstle and a large town) and our relations are terrible. It helps a huge amount if their at war with someone else. The crusaders were sandwiched between me and the Fatimids and we both had full stacks in their regions. I decided I wanted a buffer state for when the kwarezmians finally finish off the turks, so I offered them vassalship and 5000 gold (nothing compared to my treasury) and now anytime I take over an eastern settlement that I don't want I just give it to them.

Wait until they start fighting someone else. The AI hates fighting two wars as once, and if there strong they will usually want peace, If there weak then vassalship it is. Hope this helps.

    For a vassal.

    Make sure they have
    • One settlement left
    • That settlement is under siege from yours truly
    • YYou have several armies devestating the region with their last settlement
    • Your relations are aboxe abysmal (The better they are, the more inclined they are to do it!)
    • If the AI is likely to be wiped out it will accept

But sometimes the AI is stubborn, and you'll just have to concentrate making someone else your vassal

    Hope this helps!

I got a somewhat related question. I play as the HRE and I need to eliminate France, Genoa, and Danemark for victory conditions. If I have made them vassals would I meet victory conditions? It seems obviously not but just asking.
Oh, for Heaven's sake, now you're being deliberately stupid.

I don't think so, because victory conditions rely on code related to faction eliminated {,denmark} = true or something like that. So your going to have to take a dive in relations for two turns, but it should be over quickly

Actually vassals do count towards your victory conditions. All I can find for a source is:

http://www.twcenter.net/forums/showthread.php?t=332707 (Where some people say the same thing as me.)

But I'm 99.9% sure that vassals count towards victory conditions.

He only mentioned them going towards your required settlements, not removed factions. So it would be handier in the long campaign goals, I think.

Or we could wait for Caesar's input

Depends what difficulty you're playing on. I've found that on hard and vh, the ai will never oblige you no matter how perilous their position. This is why I always play on normal.

Another near impossibility, even on the lower difficulties. In my experience (crazy as this is) it's actually easier to get a country to become your vassal if you're not completely dominating them (nuts ).

The reason for this (as I understand it) is that CA made a terrible error when they were programming diplomacy (not exactly a huge secret).

I see the existence of two major influences on diplomacy, respect/goodwill and fear (massive generalisation, but the limit of what can be represented in a game). By this, I mean that there are two ways through which diplomatic goals can be achieved. On one hand, if you have good relations with a faction they will naturally want to assist you, or you can use political, military or economic pressure to bully a faction into accomodating your needs.

CA has completely ommited to calculate the positive influences fear/hatred can have on diplomatic negotiations, interpreting one faction disliking another as meaning that it is impossible for those factions to ever form any kind of treaty (they are destined to be at war... FOREVER). Alas, if they had devised a system in which the ai would associate military defeats with its desire for ceasefires...

Haha, the size of my posts never ceases to amaze me. Forgive me, my opinions on TW ai would fill several books.

    To your question on vassals:

    1. Make your reputation as good as possible.
    2. Keep your relations with the faction you are trying to subordinate as positive as you can (the best time to ask for vassalage, in my experience, has been right after you declare war them).
    3. (nuts ) Don't fight battles against the faction, as this drastically decreases your relations with them.

    4. Have a load of money, at least 25,000 florins. Ironic, seeing as if a faction is in a position to become a vassal then money would be the least of its worries.

    5. Good luck, you'll need it.

P.S. My experiences are with 6.1, so hopefully, no, I'm sure things have improved.

Awesome I dont have to kill these poor Genoan's. The Reich needs slaves anyhow, muhahahahaha. Well I guess I gonna have to vassalize Danemark. France is another story.
