I keep hearing this and than unit is an assault unit, good for taking walls and such. Which units are considered assault troops and why?

One of the most important traits is heavy armor, becaure off all the arrows fired at them.
Also moralle is importand because it sometimes takes time to get reenforcement.

Almost all elite units can be used as Assaulttroops.
As romans the Pedites Extraordinarie are the uberman.

Heavy armour, high lethality and high stamina.

Axemen are also good on walls.

Defensive skill is perhaps the most important trait, along with morale. This is why all phalanx troops suck on walls - their secondary weapons aren't bad, but their defence skill is abysmal.

Generally, swordsmen and axemen make good assault troops.

For pre-Marian Romans, Pedites Extraordinarii are the superior option, despite their low lethality. Principes are also good, though the Polybian variant is far better at this than the Camillan one. Samnitici Milites aren't half bad either, though they're only available as mercs after the Polybian reform. After the Marian Reforms, you get Legionaries who are ideal for this task. The Romans are perhaps the meanest factions when it comes to fighting on walls.

For KH, Thorakitai Hoplitai are the best assault unit. Hoplitai and Iphikratean Hoplites are also useful. Even Peltasts are quite good at this and can beat phalanx troops on a wall.

Other Hellenistic factions should use their various non-phalanx elite units (especially Agrianians). Also, Eastern Axemen or the various Galatian units are very useful at assault.

For Barbarians, longswordsmen are the most effective. Milnaht or factional elite infantry (Carnutes, Gaesatae, ...) are especially good at this. Also Worgozez are ideal (fear effect+high lethality+AP+high attack/defence), though they suffer from being almost unarmoured.

For all factions that have access to them, Guild Warriors or Rhomphaiaphoroi are an excellent choice. Make sure to deploy them against other armoured troops however, not against Akontistai - the bugged combat behaviour of RTW makes them throw their javelins in melee, which can cause extreme losses to your precious elites.

Ive found Phalanx units to be really inexplicably good on the walls.

They chewed through my marian Legionaries who were defending.

In the end i resorted to abandoning the walls and killing them in the large city centre, much better results.

These phalangites weren't, by chance, Chaonion Agema with several experience chevrons?

I have trouble remembering the Greek names, but they were the Seleucid basic Phalangite. With the bronze shields. They had a couple of chevrons.

why are Samnitici Milites disabled after the Polybian reforms? By the time I've bringing in enough money to make them a viable option for two of my allied infantry units they are turned off and there is no point getting them as Mercs

Ah yes, I remember when me and my friends would play Arrow, Flax, Spear. We would spend all day having the time of our lives.

I feel like in EB and RTW in general big battles around cities rarely happen. At least when it comes to defense, I don't think I've ever gotten to appreciate defending stone walls in my EB romani campaign. I did fight off a greek attack on a palisade though
