Default LT - a couple of questions

Couple of questions on house rules:

    - I'm playing Julii and I've taken Bononia (it made such huge strategic sense there was no way I couldn't do it). However, the question is, I know house rules allow me 20 regons pre-marius, but prevets me from taking important enemy settlements. Can I take all the northern italy gallic towns? It would open me up to direct conflict with the Greeks and Germans, ad I don't think it would hugely weaken Gaul.

    - Shieldwalls, I run them at 4 deep as I've found charging barbarians break through 2 deep. Again I justify that as the Romans would do the same. Is it ok?

    - Gaurd mode - should that be off or on? I have it on as otherwise I'd spend my entire time pressing pause to try to redress the lines, something that the Centurians would do in real life.

    - Finaly, how much of a difference will this new size-increasing beta test make? What new tactics do I need to use, and what feedback do you want?
: - It's my smilie and I'll use it if I want to......

Oh it would hugely weaken Gaul, but Gaul is so unrealistic in its power. I think it is generally accepted that taking Northern Italy before Marius is a valid expansion.

Couple of questions on house rules:

    1. Question 1 seems fine, I mean I take different areas also, the only house rule on this I know of is not blitzing.

    2. Shield wall should be 2 rank think. I have no problems with the AI breaking through with infantry unless the men die, only cavalry can break through as they should. If I could I would have made it 2 ranks only so if you want to play right with this tighter formation I suggest 2 ranks to be historical and more of a challenge.

    3. Gaurd mode needs to be used with the shield other wise it isnt really a shield wall. CA has it enabled for thier shield wall and have 2 ranks deep also., though being so tight it can look like 4 but its really 2 ranks.

    4. Tactics like you should be using already, But now you have to watch more when you see 240 Berzerkers heading your way the Hastatii will not hold them long. lol Basically all AI armies except the romans have 240 men with archers being 200. Romans will be scaled 160 men, 180 men auxilia infanrty, 180 men Javelinmen which means the AI will outnumber you with them, since they dont use them as effectively as the player. 160 Archers, 92 cavalry, 80 for javelin cavalry.

Seems to be working out good. I readjusted the Triarii so now they are more effective than the Pilum premarius units. Its not in the beta, but in the final version it will be. Over all its harder for the player with the larger settings since 240 spartan units against 160 isnt good news. So Tactics like using your javelins on the right units and archers on the others. When to hold back your cavalry can make the difference on winning.

In my test the first battle I test with the gauls I lost badly, but the punched my center while I was destracted with other cavalry on my flank. Now time is crucial and using the right men for the job a must! Now I take about 400 casualties instead of 50, and the Gaul armies are HUGE. Of course Imagine the Germans which have even better troops than gaul and you will see why support of the Legions is a Must now.

acorrding to the simple law of actions, three unexpected consequences will come from every expected consequence. you must therefore examine the situation from all sides before acting.:hmmm:

beware your allies more than you neighbors as they might be planning behind the curtain of submission.
