Icon5 Do you request map information from the AI?

I used to but then I realized it was making the game more than twice as long as it needed to be (or somewhere thereabouts) so I stopped trading map information for map information...I suppose I could just turn off AI movements, making it so I don't see what they do, but I like to know if they're on my land or sneaking up on me...I also used to play with permanent watchtowers, although apparently those don't work with BGR, so now I'm left either using togge_fow or playing in the dark....I use togge_fow sparingly but I feel like it is cheating since I end up selling my map information to the AI when I have no use for their own.

I used to do that, but then I realize that once you get their map info you can't get another. I mean you can, but the map won't update, even if the AI faction expanded their territory or vice versa. (Though, I have no idea if this is a bug happens to me or a common one, didn't felt necessary to report it as a bug). So I decided to use "toggle_fow" instead.

You can toggle it to see borders of other factions through minimap without peeking them over campaign map, so that you won't see their armies, agents whatever and won't spoil the fun, like spotting an invasion force on the way etc. And it doesn't feel like much of a cheat that way. Not that I care about cheating or not, do it if you like, it's about how you enjoy the game, for some people, cheating is a part of it.

Wait, how does getting map information let you see through the fog of war? AFAIK, trading map information doesn't let you see armies and agents, only city locations and who owns them.

I always seek out map information.

If for no other reason than to fill out my mini map.

I generally try to trade for map info with every other neighbor... they often have knowledge of the neighbors I don't trade for and then later in the game I can ask the ones I didn't yet trade for and get more updated info. Then as expand I get new neighbors and start the cycle over again.

Never noticed asking a 2nd time for map info does not update the first from the same faction but that late in the game using spies works well and a network of watch towers on your own territory.

I use espionage at an ultimate level, so spies & assassins are vital for my campaigns. And yes, watchtowers ofcourse are useful.

Is there any diference if the AI knows your map or not? It's AI after all. It knows everything about towns and who owns them without engaging in diplomacy. Am I right?

It doesn't update for you? Thats strange. I only buy it just to see updates on wars and such.

That is all it does. That and, lets generals not run into settlements they have no idea about (if theyr not on your map)

Well the AI does know when your garrisons are small, but it does send diplomats to my capital when they could have my newst, recently conquered settlement closer to them. Also, sometimes foreign dips go to a newly conquered city but dont do anything, hoping to meet the older faction (in my mind thats why atleast )

I personally always buy map info and trade it around (But keep mine rare so as to be a good leverage for buying things later on.) I like to have a filled mini map without FOW off. Also, its just fun and second hand to me

If you ask a faction for map info again later, they will update you, so whatever whoever said above, is incorrect.

Not only that but it's great for networking; if you're playing as England, and France gets map into from Spain, if you get map info from France you'll know what they know - i.e the lay of the land in France as well as Spain.

Don't understand Toggle_FoW at all, it's just a cheat to me. Turn on follow AI movement and you'll soon know if an army is landing on your shores. Where's the fun if NASA's helping you plan in advance?

I agree, as soon as the Venetarians or Hungarians show up at your doorstep, without the slightest sign. And you a loose a settlement or two, it makes it, all the more exciting to play the game.

But, yes. I do request map infomation from my closest neighbours. Just to keep an eye on them, and I occasionally ask them, to exchange it, for gold. To see how much they have expanded or shunk over time.
I've found out, if they do not wish to trade it, with me. It is because they have either not expanded or shunk, or they really have a grudge towards the nation you are playing.

It could be a glitch he experiences with his installation/computer.

I wonder if map info influences trade rights effects on your economy?

There was a post of mine in which i explained it in details but now it's buried somewhere.

In a simple line if we are say receiving 32f from say Venice and we are HRE in bologna and then we make trade agreement with them the then the number becomes like 74f.
If u want a detailed explanation i can dig it up.
