Default Recommend me a Non-Hollywood film

Just finished watching Un Prophete and currently have no films to watch. I've pretty much given up on Hollywood as most of what they shovel out these days is junk (with a few exceptions).

Can any of the Europeans/Pakistanis/Indians/Asians/Arabs/Israelis anyone recommend me a good film from your country (or anywhere)? I don't mind subtitles at all.

To give you an idea of my taste I enjoyed the following (in no real particular order):

    Revanche
    The Battle of Algiers
    Mongol
The Chan-wook Park series (Old boy, etc.)
    Z
    Tae Guk Gi (Brotherhood)
City of God (and the series)
    Let the Right One In
    Downfall
    Baader-Meinhof Complex
    Kidulthood/Adulthood
    This is England
    Moon
    Terribly Happy
    Antichrist
    Ten Canoes
    Pimp
    Shinjuku Incident
    Twilight Samurai
    Pusher (trilogy)

I especially like crime/prison dramas as you can see. I'm a sociologist though so I really have a wide variety of interests when it comes to human drama.

Anyone willing to help me out?

    White Sun of the Desert.

If you can't get a hold of it, it's on Youtube in its entirety, with subtitles.

Red Cliff: Destiny lies in the Wind was pretty cool. It's a two part movie about the Battle of the Red Cliffs from Romance of the Three Kingdoms, it's got awesome action, decent acting, and it's very stylish while not going the way of 300 with historical accuracy (Though I'm sure they took a lot of liberties with that).

And if you like no-holds-barred horror movies you can watch Cannibal Holocaust on Google Videos in it's entirety, it was directed by an italian man and it's not a 'Gorefest' like Saw or some of the slasher movies, the violence looks very realistic and is particularly horrifying because of this.

I don't watch many foreign films, mainly because the video stores don't carry them and I refuse to pirate them, but I've enjoyed these enough to recommend them.

Who goes to video stores anymore honestly? Amazon has most movies, you can sub them yourself if they don't come with them (if subs are available), and there are also digital distribution like Netflix and others which have many "foreign" films.

I'm not real big on gore, I don't mind it in the right context, but gratuitous violence isn't really my thing (most action movies).

I've seen White Sun of the Desert and it was pretty good, but not really what I was expecting. I didn't really look much into it before renting it, and had just seen The Red and the White, another good movie about the period and I think comparable to even All Quiet on the Western Front as a brutal, honest war film/story.

How about the german original of the upcoming US-remake of "Das Experiment" ?

This one might be harder to get a hold of outside of G.,"Muxmäuschenstill":

Also, you can't go wrong with Haneke:
    "Funny Games"
(or the remake Funny Games US )
    "Benny's Video"

If you liked "Cidade de deus", how about "Tropa de Elite" or "Cidade dos homes" (don't know if the latter's got anything to do with the tv-series).

Will have to see if I can find those German movies, but I've seen Tropa de Elite and "Ciúdad dos hommens" is pretty much just the finale of the series (which I really enjoyed). I'd love more movies about/from Brazil though if anyone could recommend some.

Try the movies by the Dardennes brothers. They've got a very naturalistic style and really sombre storylines.

I think Rosetta and L'Enfant are their most popular movies.

La Haine and Irreversible are good movies as well, and if you like dark comedy you might want to try C'est arrivé prèz de chez vous (or Man Bites Dog in English) but it's a bit of an acquired taste
Some day I'll actually write all the reviews I keep promising...

There's an Argentinian thriller I saw earlier this year called The Secret of Their Eyes (El Secreto de sus Ojos).

It's excellent. One of the best films I've ever seen.

Watch Andrei Tarkovsky's films. Solaris, Stalker, Andrei Rublev, among others. Beware, though. They're not light films. They might bore you to death if you're unprepared.

Bleeder (1999) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0161292/ is from the same director that made the Pusher movies, and it features a lot of the same actors. Lots of drama and exiting sociological stuff in it too.

If you want to watch something insightful about American culture, but distinctly un-hollywood, I strongly recommend Jim Jarmusch's films. Hopefully you haven't already dismissed him?

The truth is that I probably recommend him to anyone. Anyways, Down By Law and Dead Man are good places to start (I reviewed the latter in vizigothe's film review thread), I think a number of his are in the Criterion Collection.
