A short excerpt from a good article celebrating the life of a favorite author who will be 90 in a day:

"What remains for those who haven’t read Bradbury for some time are memorable books worth rereading and a collage of unforgettable images: the canals of Mars filled with fragrant wine, a gun that fires deadly bees, a man covered with animated tattoos, a cocky gun-slinging bully sitting down in a barber chair for his final shave at the hands of a barber he’s threatened once too often, a spaceship harvesting a small fragment of the sun, a frightened old woman racing home through the midnight streets of Green Town and groping for the light switch in a darkened room in which a stranger awaits, and an adolescent boy fearing for the life of his humble, decent father amid the autumn twilight in a small Midwestern town."

I spent many a lazy summer afternoon under a tree reading his wonderful works. I did so again a few days ago doing a reread on Dandelion Wine. For those who have not read his works, summer is the best time to do so. Do it as I do, under a tree on a lazy day when your imagination can run wild.

I always lol at how much he looks like my high school Chemistry teacher, Mr. Bizarre Barr.

Anyway. In my opinion, Bradbury's most powerful work and true masterpiece is, not Fahrenheit 451, but his short story There Will Come Soft Rains. Every child and every adult should be required to read that; I can guarantee that, if they do, there will never be a nuclear war, ever.

I always had a fondness for the short story, "The Veldt". Kind of like a Twillite Zone episode to punish parents too lazy to actually spend time raising their own children.

Love his short stories, but longer novels always bored me for some reason.

still, I agree that he's one of the greatest sci-fi writers.
