    Default Putin's policies

    What is his policy?
On one hand he puts the statue of Iron Felix back up and calls the fall of the USSR the greatest geopolitical disaster of the century, and on the other he persecutes communists and does his best to get rid off old socialist policies.
What is the man's goal, and how do you picture the near future of Russia?
Is it me, or did the world quite recently become so much less stable and predictable, or has it always been this way and I have just never noticed?

He could be simply persecuting other communists to consolidate his own power...he doesn't necessarily need to have Russia as a communist dictatorship, any old dictatorship could do for most meglomaniacal fellas...

    He hardly seems megalomaniacal.
But being an ex KGB agent he shows little emotion or any visible signs of feelings, so I guess we don't know for sure.

    You're ex-KGB? Holy [censored]!

I think that Putin wants the people to be content, by giving them illusions of grandeur ("Remember: No matter how mad at me you are, no matter how little food you have, we used to be a great power!" so they froget their current status), while at the same time, he wants to preserve the political structure that supports him, by maintaining his own power and crushing dissidents.

I don't believe he sees any hypocrisy, although we might.

Er think he meant Putin is ex KGB not that he was. As far as Putin goes, I dont think he has any interest in 'communist russia' but rather dictatorship russia. Most of his moves seem to strike at anything that he thinks might question/weaken the power of the presidency, be it communist, be it capitalist or even evidently foreign charity organizations (as shown by Russia's move this past week). Still waiting to see what happens next election, I know what he has said in public but I think we need to see the result after the election before judging.

It's very hard to keep the Russian federation together and happy.
I think Putin realy just wants stability for his country, and IMO he is doing a good job so far.

It's very easy to critisize the leader of a country that has big political and economic problems
Nobody ever critisized the leaders of Luxembourg.

Yes we need to warn the world about the secret alliance between Monaco, Lichtenstein, Andora, Malta, and Fiji. They plan to take over the world...

Seriously, I think Putin is just trying to turn Russia back into a superpower and consolidate his power.

I'm a bit too young for that

    Good point.
I guess it could be worse, as he is actualy a decent guy.
Oh well, time to forget of a return to communism and hope that everything turns out well during this regime.

Its common sense to think putin is up to no good, though what that no good thing is a question up in the air. IMO his jailing that oil tycoon for supporting an opposition party should be proof enough that he doesn't care for democracy.

I think his policy, though, is to stay in power and appease the masses. Whatever the people, en-masse, want is what Russia's future will be. However it will be, in the end, up to him as they really dont have another choice.

Right now he is not that solid.
He came dangerosly closed to being overthrown around March 2005 (I was in Russia at the time, and from what I've heard of the Americans there were no reports whatsoever of it).

Post-WW I Checkoslovakia proved that a country of multi-ethnicities could exist under a democracy.

I agree that Putin seems to want to consolidate power and return Russia into a superpower.
I am by no means a master of politics, but I think, as has been pointed out, the only plausible avenue is for him to be dictator.
I don't know enough to decide if Russia being a democracy would be better than a dictatorship.
