John, Paul, George and Ringo were the members of the band called by many the greatest band of all time, (I for one agree) : The Beatles. The Beatles have given us hundreds of songs and influenced music of many musicians since. They are remembered for being icons of the baby boom and the 60s. Many people still love them today, and they seem to have stood the test of time. Now I was born when the Beatles were recording the number 2 hit Free as a Bird, in the 90s and I love the Beatles, though I am a fan of some music today, my main love is for older stuff and the Beatles are the crown of my music collection. Is this a strainge for your favourite band to have broke up about 25 years before your birth?

Of course it isn't weird. I have a surprisingly disproportionate amount of old music in my library (compared to people my age), most of which consists of the The Beatles. I had a revival when I was playing Beatles: Rock Band at my friends house like a year ago. We stayed up all night playing all of the songs on every stage and it was a blast. I think 100 years from now, people will know that The Beatles was one of the most prominent rock groups in history, maybe on the same level as people like Mozart or Beethoven. At least there's safe knowledge knowing that there will always be that weird group of people who listen to the Beatles like the small group of teenagers who listen to classical music regularly.

    My favorite songs:
    And Your Bird Can Sing
    I'm Looking Through You
    Helter Skelter
    Here Comes the Sun
    I Wanna Be Your Man
    Taxman
    While My Guitar Gently Weeps

Admittedly they do have some weird on some of their albums that makes me question how high they were at the time, but the majority of it is pretty good.

Those are great ones I think may favourites would have to be :
With a Little Help From My Friends (I think Ringo's voice is great)
    Here Comes the Sun
    I've Got a Feeling
    Hey Jude
    She Loves You
    I Saw Here Standing There
    Something
    Long Tall Sally
    Twist and Shout
    Octupus's Garden

Some of my friends, however, find it strange that I only like musicians tha died +30 years ago. I don't understand why people think it's strange to like old music.
That is exactly what happens to me with my friends, they think I should like new stuff and I do a bit but some think I should like screamo stuff which I cant stand! Why cant I like what I want, why should I like the stuff in the top 10 every week.

Calling the Beatles overrated is like calling Shakespeare, Mozart, and Hitchcock overrated. Each one (including the Beatles) were master's of their respective craft and influenced so much when they were in their prime. Just because you only listen to their earlier albums and decide that they are a pop band doesn't mean they are. The fact that the band managed to evolve and perfect themselves from when they were appearing on Ready, Steady, Go promoting their (numerous) number-one singles to releasing the masterful and epically-scaled Sgt. Pepper's album is an enormous and legendary achievement in itself. Please, next time you label a band because of it's popularity, please explore and hear everything it has to offer before making comments like this.

How is it overrated for the 21st century? Is Jazz overrated just because people wished that other people listened to it? How have their merits changed since when they played it? People today on average hold the Beatles in either equal or less regard than people did when they were playing, so I don't see how it's overrated-ness could change between 1960 and now.

Also, I'm now in love with the guitar solo thing in Tomorrow Never Knows. It's soooooo cooooool.

They're overrated because a lot of people, mainly younger people who want to show they're "different," listen to the Beatles simply because they're old, so they can have something "original" to distinguish them from the crowd. Their music, when looking at all the wide ranges of music that have been produced since, is not that special, nor does it require the almost religious zealotry some people seem to have when it comes to dealing with it. They are just an average sounding pop band from an older time.

    Fixed
What kind of kids do you talk to about the Beatles? I don't know a single person who doesn't like the Beatles for their sound. But then again, I don't know many people who try to be posers. I for one am not a fan of the Beatles simply because other people aren't, but because I prefer their music to a lot of today's music. That's not to say I don't have any current music. I was a Killers and Coldplay fan long before I was a Beatles fan, and the music I regularly listen to is primarily alternative rock and techno before any Beatles stuff.

You never thought that maybe the "different" folks, y'know, liked their sound? I think forcing yourself to like a band doesn't work like that. Atleast not where I'm from.

Their music was incredibly special. Revolver was light-years ahead of its time. "Tomorrow Never Knows" was the prototype for the whole psychedelic genre and used plenty of techniques that many of that style's progenitors hadn't even dreamed of. You do realize that electronica, techno, rap, and modern rock couldn't have been possible 50 years ago? How in the hell can it be considered not special when the Beatles were the first ones to do something outside of the box? That sounds very special to me, as I haven't heard any mainstream pop act nowadays do or attempt what the Beatles have done: sound original.

Don't know what music scene you're used to, but I'm used to the British guitar pop/rock scene, and just about everyone traces their influences back to the Beatles, simply because they combined cutting edge experimentalism with popular music. No-one before had succeeded in popularising the avant garde to such an extent, and everyone after wanted to emulate the Beatles and cut their own furrow. Looking at the pop music that came before, I strongly doubt popular musicians would dare to explore the more far out areas of music were it not for the pioneering example of the Beatles.

Personally I'm more of a Stones fan.
My experience of the Beatles came via more modern music. I'd previously only known of their early pop songs, and didn't think much of the Beatles, and when I got into guitar music, it was more contemporary stuff which I thought was the bee's knees. These musicians kept referring back to the Beatles, so I thought I'd check out what they were talking about. And I kept checking it out. I eventually found the Beatles to be more interesting than the stuff I was originally interested in, for their sheer range, not to mention their execution.

Or maybe we listen to them because they're one of the greatest musical acts of all time and their sheer quality, depth and inventiveness makes their music a truly enjoyable experience?

The Beatles aren't "average sounding" even by today's standards ... but in the '60s they REVOLUTIONIZED music. The Beatles are how we got from Elvis, Chuck Berry and rockabilly to Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, and modern rock music. Basically every rock band, indeed, every band with a singer, a drummer, a guitarist and a bassist, owes something in their music to the Beatles. The Beatles were the most unique musical group of their decade bar none, and it's not even close.

They wrote the first metal song for christ's sake. In 1968.

Maybe you understand listening to music to be something that is viewed on you by other people. maybe some people genuinely enjoy their music. What an arrogant thing to say.
