now with ss fully implement RR/RC, BfB & CBUR; which faction has the strongest infantry?

the elites in infantry departement : Teutons, Crusaders, Byz, HRE, Sicily, Portugal, Denmark, England, Turks

I'm counting all kind of infantries including archers, javelins and naffatuns/shiponatores

Naffatuns/shiponatores shouldn't be counted as they don't really fight like infantry and they are special unit with extreme limited availability. Same with Holy Canons...

For best units otherwise I'd have to think about it between Almaughavers, Janissaries, and whatever the best Halberdier unit is. All those units combine flexibility, abundance, and great stats.

[For England Men]

I would say;

Infantry : Romans are the best, I agree Norway locally have little to match them early on, Fatimids if you are playing RR have best militia units and so do italian factions which are nearly always available.

all round: england , france , HRE

late: same as above with spain

haven't tried any eastern european factions

Try any infantry vs. fully upgraded Templar Guard.......I dare you to.

I have run many tests in custom battle, and these guys DESTROY Janissaries. All the Dane infantry was slaughtered.

Even fully upgraded Imperial Knights(dismounted) were taken out.

Back on topic:

I would say for best infantry faction Crusader States, for several reasons.

1. Tons of great dismounted knight units, most with AP. St. Lazarus Knights are sweet, especially once their armor is upgraded. They eat dismounted fuedal knights for lunch.

2. Good spear/pike units. Combination of pikes with Voulges right behind is great for taking cavalry charges.

3. Great city roster. Not only are the castly infantry good, but you can recruit Edessan Guard in towns to back up the other milita units.

4. Good overall mix of units....I love the look of the Templar Heavy spearmen, andTemplar Zweihanders are great for smashing pike formations.

Close second/third would be England, and Danemark.

i like to play as the papacy by adding them to the descr_strat. Swiss foot and armoured pikes are all I have to say

EDIT: I know they are mercenaries, but still, they are insane units!

The Swiss are an amazing unit though.

Well the Scotts have good pikes, but they can not kill well armored infantry. Heavy infantry will cut through pikes like butter, especially 2 handers becuase of the unit spacing they move through pikes easier than other troops.

Sweet, I didn't notice that until now. Does make sense, two handers have longer weapons than a one hander. More powerful too, think I will test that out now. I do usually "overlap" my pike/halberd units tho, like have them in the same space... know what i mean?

The scots have the best infantry.

Line of pikes, no vikings can get past if used right. You can use them to push through the enemy too, causing a mishmash of enemy units pounding into long sharp pikes. Great shock troops. The highland nobles beat any other two handed sword units in the game and you can use the archers as a melee force if needed. I don't know how many times i've brought my archers round behind the enemy to charge and box them in, saving the day against a much larger force.

Also, those scottish mercs aren't that expensive and they kick butt.

Denmark for vanila. Their viking raider is useful from the early to late game. Plus some armor they can beat or inflict heavy loss to the other troop

Scot for this mod. They are a Macedon Phalanx

Depends very much what era, but late era I would say HRE.

I dont know why you guys hate on hungarian infantry. Stats suck, very true, but look at it this way, when i go to war, i can field entire legions of dirty stinky peasants and slav's. They may not be much to look at but many times i have seen them overrun a more stately and preety force of byzantines. Quantity has a quality all on its own

But i wont even try to argue that they are the "best". Honestly, the best infantry for me is the HRE. That faction just feels so great when your smashing into neat and tidy enemy lines like some kind of evil "TEUTONIC FIST". All of their heavy infantry is essentially geared to an assault role. Even if im playing on the defensive, its charge charge charge, FOR ZE REICH !

But thats just me. Scandanavia probably beats that since it gets vikings which are the most cost effective unit in the entire game quite possibly, but then again i play for fun and whats more fun than pounding your foes into itty bitty pieces with some real heavy metal ? Not much, i daresay.

I could not agree more. One of my most enjoyable campaign was playing Late Era Denmark. I conquered the world with fully upgraded Vikings. I don't care who my opposition is. Flemish Pikemen, Italian militia, HRE heavy infantry, English archers, Russian musketeers, Turkish Jannisaries, Byz legionaries, they all go down soon enough. The viking style is just so up close and personal. The only problem is when they come up against those French Lancers. I had no answer to those buggers at all.

And it's even better when you role play. I satisfied myself with just Scandanavia, the British Isle, the Baltic Sea, and mainly Northern Europe. But I just send stacks after stacks into random lands sacking and pillaging, Viking in the 14th century yal!

On topic though, my vote goes to the HRE. If every faction was stripped down to just it's infantry, HRE would win. They have, not just some of the best, but some of the most versatile and varied infantry as well.

Dismounted Imperial Knights will kill JHI though, Templar Guard and Ritterbruders will kill JHI as well.

Well, in 6.1 it was the Giltane HI from Lithuania. Basically they were JHI with the "frighten infantry trait" Have not tried them in 6.3.
