Default Rome- is it worth it?

Im a relatively new player to Total war series, and i hear many ppl saying that Rome is the best tw. "111omgromepwnsomg! omg rome is so good" So i'm probably going to buy it too!

But, i mean. Rome is a old game...a relatively old game. 2004. Is it worth buying? Because, i mean, how long more will people play it and etc...is it durable.. ( i guess yea, since all TWS are ) and is it really that good? I'm hesiting so much about buying it because here in Brazil games are expensive, and Rome gold edition is 100 bucks.

    Thank you.

Rome is a really good game in vanilla however with all of the mod content available you will get more than enough use, as their are mods that step the graphics up to MTW2 and Roma Surrectum 2 is close to release . But 100$ seems a lot for a game.

    100$

Strange. When I bought it this year, it was some of the price off, but it cost only 2.50 in my currency (LVL), that would be 5 dollars. Something is wrong there (in Brasil).

I think in the UK schools are still out for this week and next. After that is should be safer to go on holiday - prices won't be as high and less people about.
i was replying to dacder as to why mp was so empty at the time he asked the question. it was because the vacations in most countries were ending. most of the rtw croud is in between 15 and 50 so they all go back to school or work.

Hey, it looks that the battles r bigger than the ones in M2TW... how much men does a standard infantry unit in rome have? with Huge scale?
160 you wouldnt want to play huge in MP though. makes the game easier.

Well, 100 bucks seems a little high. Im in the U.S. and it cost about 20 last time I checked. Overall, RTW gold edition is an awesome game to play. The battles give it a real ancient glory feel to it and a smoothness all its own. It seems pretty endurable because it has been popular since its release. The mods for it are some of the best selection too.
Rep me and ill rep you back. Make sure you leave your name.

OMG rtw vanilla is ok, but once you get into mods, dude it is so worth it, i guarantee you will spend hours, absorbed in the game wiping away the Carthaginian off the map, (hopefully i will welcome you as a roman brother then as a Greek dog or barbarian scum ) and of course your rival roman factions (taking out the senate is also very satisfying after being their lap dog for so long)

80 bucks?? Don't get it, whoever put that much for RTW is ripping you off. 20 bucks for gold edition, another 5 for the alexander expansion.

But definitely get this game. The mods are superb. So is the vanilla game.

The magic in Rome is the mods for the game....here
with the mods listed in the section that i linked you for you basically get so many more games, so essentially with your one purchase you now have minimum 5 new games to play.

    Arguably the best are
    RTR
    roma surrectum
    Ib
    etc etc

I live in Saf and the Rome gold edition is roughly the same as what you paid...ok a bit less but it is well worth it.....
Also the downloads are not huge so it wont break your ADSL account.. assuming you are limited like we are in SAF

100$ for a game ! It's cost a lot. But you will have a great time with it for sure. Vanila Rome is good and with a huge number of mods from here it's magnificent.

Checkout Steam. It's alot cheaper. Bought mine there (Gold Edition) for 14.99€ (19.30$). And trust me, it's worth it... Like stated above, after finishing vanilla, there are hundreds of mod to choose from, that enhance the game and keep you hooked. I've got both Med2 Gold and Rome Gold, and still am playing Rome.

    IMHO.

    100$ !!! jezus christ :O

we in Holland have a online shop named "Bol" and there the Gold edition cost 9,99€ wich is maybe 12$
so you should really try it with steam.

and yes RTW is really worth it (still now) maybe the graphics are a little out-dated but Roma Surrectum II is gonna change that.
people also still play online and it's really fun in the chat

Rome Total War Vanila - Meh...
but with all the Mods you can download you should really buy it.

The Fourth Age Total War is a really nice mod for BI.

Yeah but LOTRTW still beats it.
And Beckyolt, Lucarius is correct: Hier kost RTW tien Euro.

yeah i know LOTRTW is much better because of the extra units, factions and bigger campaign map.
but i could never play it because i don't have Alexander or BI
maybe because i have the worst computer of the whole forum xD

sometimes i just don't understand that they make those epic LoTR mods for BI and Alexander...
    more people play RTW
i think BI has more $h!T to mod with or something.

The diplomacy is better than ETW but worse than M2, so don't expect too much from it.

There is diplomacy in RTW? Well basically far away faction are in good relations with you and accept alliances, but as soon as they border you they start a war after some turns.
And there is also a bug(?). When you have terminated a faction their former allies will never accept a ceasefire so you are at war with them for the rest of your campaign.

And RTW vanilla is for sure NOT the best game in the series. It is just ok but the expansion Barbarian Invasion is much better imho. Only mods made RTW one of the most successful and most loved TW games. Without ROP and EB (my two favourite mods) I would have uninstalled RTW soon and either gone back to MTW or would have bought the newer M2:TW.
