    Default Quick question on diplomacy

Playing Teutons, got excommunicated, my capital crusaded. Novgorod snapped it right under their noses, 1 turn before the closest crusading army got there.

The problem is, the AI seems stuck on the crusade. It's been 40 turns since then but I'm still at war w/ everybody. Even the HRE is unwilling on peace no matter what's my offer, even though we have "amiable" relation. So, how do I unstuck the AIs who probably still live in their crusade?

First step is to get "recommunicated" - improve your relations with the pope aka buy your way back

The killing hasn't stopped for the past 40 turns but I just want to get piece and the damn trade rights

The old turd in Rome is quite a high maintenance and I'm short on money. What's confusing me is the HRE is also excommed, down to 5 settlements (not b/c of me, I haven't fired a single arrow against them) and still unwilling to sign peace. And I just want to make my W border safe and stable

are their armies stuck in crusade? like have Crusade flags above their armies? Then it is probably a bug
if not, then the Crusade should have canceled for them.

yet your still excomunicated, and that is not so good
did the pope not die in 40 turns? if he dies you automatically get reconciled.
and just what the other guys say, assasinate him works too or buy your self back.

or crazy thought: you can just trade him a settlement to your West for reconcile, nice border too ^^

Normally killing your faction leader should also lead to reconciliation.

I hope this helps in your current campaign:

    *About Diplomacy in crusades:
If you are crusading or you are an objective of a crusade, you cannot arrange a cease fire treaty directly -because the option did not appears in your menu-, but...

You can offer something valuable to a faction and press to see what they want in exchange, sometimes they come with a peace agreement...Yes! you cannot offer that, but they can offer that to you as a counter offering. Sometimes they can offer you, to become his vassal -accept only if you're under REALLY a great preassure-

*Short notes about vassallizations: Take in mind that being vassal of that faction could lead to cease hostilities with other factions involved in your war against u (if they were allies), but the price of being vassal is great (less income to you, more income to your old foe).Consider that you can break the vassal status, whenever you feel strong, by declaring war to him, in other words, you choose the road to regain the freedom of your kingdom: Rebellion!

    *Returning to the flock:
Remember too that being pardoned by the pope is important too. The best way, is to give him gifts regularly, and mantain good relations with the papal states, and the faction who controls the pope actually, if you can.
I try to be a friend to, with the faction who have more cardinals in the college of cardinals.
Of course you can kill the pope, and you will get pardoned too, but remember the current pope is not really the root of your problem with the church, so eventually you will be excumunicated again if you do not follow a better plan.
As someone pointed here too, killing your faction leader could release your faction the excomunication too. I do that if my leader is weak (throw him alone to charge an enemy army until he dies). I do not recommend that if your leader is not weak or problematic.

    Good Luck!

Thanks for the advice guys, I'm not much into diplomacy and never thought of getting re-communicated Besides, this was the first catholic fraction I played so I was going the usual way of just total war

So it turned out I had to give the damn greedy a$$ 3 regions but at least the killing stopped for the moment. Now my question is how do I carefully thread along this whole catholic thing? Which factions to attack and which not?

Go to the Papal Standings, you can see who should not trifle with (highest standing with Pope) and who you can attack (lowest standings). If you target faction not even on that list, means that they're excommunicated, so you can assault them head on (if I remember correct it will even increase your papal standing).

If you ever get reconciled, don't try to stand in Pope's bad side. Not unless ofcourse, you're the supreme power on your campaign. I usually try to maintain my good relations with pope, at the start of the campaign I immediately send an emissary to them and give some gift florins every 2-3 turns, eventually I get the highest standing and it works on my advantage (you can disobey one or two papal mission and get away with it, though your standing get lower you can always buy it back!). Make no mistake too small gifts make no real difference, make it at least 2500-5000 florins. That'll guarantee it and makes the process faster So the key here is Economy not really anything to do with Diplomacy

Dont attack allys of the papal states, and try to focus your wars on enemies of them. also give the papal states around 700 florins each turn until your rep is more than acceptable. Join a crussade when whenever you can, and try to conquer the target city, your reputation with the papacy will up enormously for years to come (if you mantain your good relations). And if you cannot control the targeted city with your current garrison give it to them, that will boost even more your reputation

Well thats for sure, if you can afford more money the better, but I think thats not your case, isnt it? So little amounts also can work, but need to be constant, because rep will low sooner automatically.
