Default Changing characters - what am I doing wrong?

    Some background info:
I have a sub-mod for SS 6.3 that makes characters come of age at age 5. This makes any characters in the descr_strat between the age of 5 and 14 never come of age, though.
So what I tried to do was make all characters between 5 and 14 start out on the campaign-map instead of just in the family tree, like this:
    Added:
    Code:
    character Edmund Plantagenet, named character, male, age 12, x 80, y 217
    traits Child 2 , NotOfAge 1 , HasTutor 3 , LoyaltyStarter 1 , DreadLegacy 1 , GoodCommander 1 , Intelligent 1 , PublicFaith 1 , ReligionStarter 1 , StrategyDread 1
    army
    unit NE Bodyguard exp 2 armour 0 weapon_level 0
    Removed:
    Code:
character_record Edmund Plantagenet, male, age 12, alive, never_a_leader
This, however, makes the game CTD on campaign start (the instant one clicks start)
    What am I doing wrong?
System log, in case that helps

You can't without editing other files. The minimun age for characters by default is 16.

    I've edited it to 5 in descr_campaign_db.xml.
Characters come of age at 5 properly, but anyone over 5 not yet of age won't come of age at all.

just for clarification... the default "minors" in the descr_strat.txt that is between 5 and 16 never comes of age due to the fact that the .XML file states it that coming of age is 5 years...

so apart from the default characters, everything is working... so which files do we need to alter to add generals in the descr_strat???

That's what I'm trying to do, but the game CTDs.

I'd just make sure your new characters match existing characters. Just duplicate them, change the name to another valid one, add them to the family tree, etc.

Have you tried either upping the ages of all your children over 5 to 15 so they are already active generals, or lowering all children below 15 years of age to something under 5 years so that they can all trigger the coming of age event?

I'd lower them all under 5, except they are all historical, and I'd prefer that they remain so. I did so for SS' early era campaign, since the few character between 5 and 14 there were either fictional, or had no accurate data on when they were born.
Since I've done changes to the campaign_db.xml, anyone above the age of 5 should be considered active generals, so I don't really see how upping their ages to 15 would help, and then I once again run into the problem of their ages becoming a-historical.

So how old does a character have to be in desr_stat in order to be a playable character? Above you said that anyone 6-14 never comes of age...

I have a feeling the game treats characters below a certain age as 'children' regardless of where you put the coming of age, and they need to trigger the coming of age in order to be adults. So when you place the coming of age event to take place before their current age, the event never triggers for them. That's why they remain children. Usually this wouldn't matter because all children are usually aged lower but your new age is so low it cuts out nearly all children who would otherwise cross over the threshold during the course of a campaign. There must be some hardcode or other file governing the coming of age.

Yes, the problem is that they don't trigger the coming of age, since they're above 5 (which is what I've set the coming of age age to), but for some reason the game crashes if I try to make them into actual on-map characters.
Everyone under the age of 5 comes of age properly, it's just those above 5, but under 14 (standard coming of age age in SS) that never come of age.
The problem isn't making them come of age, it's making them into on-map characters, instead of only entries in the family trees.

You're talking about Historical Characters, yet Bringing them into battle at Age 5? Aside from the coding aspect, isn't that, you know, not historical? Upping the higher end if you're looking at expanding the age of battle.

No, I have a sub-mod for SS where characters come of age at 5, but are stuck until they're 16, so that they can get educated (and it also adds several traits that can only be gotten while under 16), so unless they get besieged and assaulted, they won't see any battle until they're over 16.

Why 5 years old though? 11 years' education just seems like overkill. And won't the portraits show an adult?

With regards to your problem, the age mod obviously isn't complete and something more is required. I'd say that your edit to descr_campaign_db.xml only refers to the coming of age of children below that age or newly birthed offspring... anyone older is governed by something else.

5 years old is mostly in case of the royal family getting wiped out, so that a heir can still get chosen. And in SS, the education system lasts for a total of 16 years, so 11 years isn't overkill IMO

Exactly, which is why I'm trying to make it so that they are of age when the campaign starts, though if I don't manage to make it work, I'll set their ages to 4.

But you need to find the other file and solve the problem - not try to just trick the game by trying to force underage characters onto the map (which is likely why you're getting CTDs). There are obviously two age thresholds in the game. The coming of age trigger and the age of 'maturity' let's call it. You seem to have only changed the trigger. Have a search through all the files again for something like 'character adult age'.

I wouldn't reccomend that. Every nation getting one or 2 generals at turn x would take away some of the different faction feels

It would be far from every nation, though.

@Redxavier: tried that now, no results :/

okey... see it as such then... how do one add new Generals in a family? It MUST be possible to add a new Family member in the descr_strat right? How have other modders manage to do this...? if you try to alter the age of a general here the game crashes, probably due to a conflict with another file stating the family Generals age...

so if we want to ADD a family member at age in the descr_strat, which other files must be edited???
