    Default Alliance with the Papacy

I have perfect relations with the Papacy and request an alliance does not show up in the diplomatic browser when I talk with them. Anyone know why?

I was at war with an ally of theirs and was close to being excommed but eventually after conquering them got my relations back to perfect. Will I have to wait for the pope to die or is this a HRE feature?
Oh, for Heaven's sake, now you're being deliberately stupid.

That sounds weird. I've only seen that happen when you are at war (would be obvious with ceasefire option in diplomacy tab), you are excommunicated, the Pope is a vassal or you are a vassal.

Yea none of that. I allied with Sicily and Venice and they are allied with them as well. They have no other allies so its not that problem. I was down to one or two crosses when Genoa was destroyed. Maybe it glitched then?

This is based purely on my observations so far, but it seems if you ever war with one of the popes allies then alliance is off the table, even if you maintain good relations. I say this because in my Aragon campaign I was able to ally with the pope, as well as in my HRE campaign UNTIL I concluded my war with Genoa, the popes allies in both cases. I see the same thing in my current Venice campaign. Then again it might be something to do with Genoa.
