    Default BGR RR help!

I started an early campaign as France, with BGR RR checked off. I was really confused by it, esp. by the economy stuff. what are nobles and estates? what is up with recruitment and war council and generals paying for troops? why is my financial overview screwed up? why is the whole thing with the noble expenses scrolls? etc. etc. basically i need to know everything. the tutorial helped a bit, but for the most part only made me more confused

k, i reread and i am a little clearer, mostly on military, but one thing still confounds me. how the heck does the economy work? i get noble expenses and noble contributions screens, but neither makes sense. according to the tutorial, the Financial overview isn't accurate. also, when viewing a general's trait, what do the ones farther down do? i get war council stuff, but what is the great estates stuff do? its seems to have no effect on me besides making me go broke... how does that stuff affect the game? thanks for the quick answer tho.

Nobles are a cost to the faction. A general with an estate will collect income from it @ 200 per turn, great estates (is effectively 2 estates) @ 400 (that might actually be 100 & 200). So your economy will be short by that amount.

That's not all bad because the nobles need the money to buy supplies, troop equipment, mercenaries and pay taxes.
Richer generals are also more likely to be chosen for War council membership and above all, having more money will prevent debt. Debt leads to borrowing money at high interest rates. Failure to pay debt means he forfeits an estate. Forfeiting an estate can ruin a general, shame his family and lead to banishment.

So estates are what make family members noble and without them they are nothing.

Don't worry if you don't get it straight away, you aren't supposed to. It's meant to be difficult. Some will quit straight away, but others stick at it and hopefully find themselves in a deeper game.

The link you have been provided with is BGR version 1 to 4, but you are playing BGRIV_E so there is a link there to redirect you here.

thank u byg. that cleared a lot up...one last thing though. so recruitment, since i am very early on, it's all mostly militia training. but generals pay for part, then take that back later on. i pay for part, and if there is no general/ family member in the settlement cost doubles. right?

Yes that is true. A General/Family member may reclaim his costs form the treasury. However, this is only if he has the "recruitment authority trait". As your empire grows, your Leader will tighten his grip on the empire restricting recruitment, eventually recruitment will fall on your War Councillors and Generals/Family members that have the "Professional recruitment staff" & later War Councillors only, and, War Councillors that are heirs only and so on. So pay attention to your Leaders traits also, to see what laws/policies your leader has issued as they will show up in his trait list also.

Pay attention to the last 4-5 traits in a Generals/Family members Biography screen they are usually the BGR related traits; look for the "has recruitment authority trait". If the General/family member has the "no recruitment authority" trait you can still recruit but the General/family member will have to pay out of his own pocket; if you do this too much the General/family member may become poor. The problem with a poor noble(s) is that they may go bankrupt during special times, for example crusades, whereby all nobles will require to pay a special crusader tax during the periods when the crusade is in effect until it ends. Bad things start happening to bankrupt nobles so generally you want to avoid this.

In the General trait list (again look at the last few traits in your Generals/Nobles trait list) you will also see things like taxes; how much the General is collecting vs how much he is paying. Generally you want tax collected to equal or be greater than tax paid, this means your noble is making money. Although, you can also make money in other ways, for example money that comes from the spoils of war etc. Finally, also pay attention to your Leaders traits, as your leader from time to time, will bring forth special laws/policies that need to be followed.

Anytime. I'm helping as much as I can though I chose not to play it for the same reason you are confused. I don't get it. Too much trying to figure it out for me. I would rather play with a good understanding of what I am doing.

If you want to learn more about it, lurk around the first link I gave you or do some forum searching, but I'm, at a loss

Originally I wasn't going to provide any instructions at all and just leave players to figure it out. That would have lead to a good simulation of an empire in administrative chaos.

Now you know you shouldn't give me rep, it's bad for my ego. I've already got out my large table top strategy map with all the little pieces and have begun plans for taking America back into the British Empire.
