Its hard to pick specific books. In no specific order:

    - A Song of Ice and Fire
    - Sharpe Series (certain books, such as Sharpe's Fortress)
    - King's Dragon
    - Piers Anthony's Xanth series
    - Sherlock Holmes (the originals)
    - Miss Marple series
    - The Sicilian

There's other fictional books I've read and liked but I cannot remember their names. I've read so many hundreds of books, but most of them are just mildly entertaining. The ones in my list are one's I'd read again, and maybe again, and had some impact on me. In the case of A Song of Ice and Fire, it encouraged me to continue attempts at writing, while Miss Marple is just a great series that doesn't quickly lose its appeal.

So hard to choose, there are just so many good books out there. But here are mine in no particular order.

    -The Count of Monte Cristo
-Thucydides' History of the Peloponnesian War
-Iliad and Odyssey(I think it's best if they are grouped as one book)
    -Frankenstein
    -The Brothers Karamazov
-One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovich
-El Cantar de mio Cid(The Song of my Cid)
    -Heart of Darkness
    -A Tale of Two Cities

EDIT How could I forget perhaps the best of them all: The Lord of the Rings Trilogy

    Capote's In Cold Blood
    Reeve's A Web Of Air
    War and Peace
Brothers Grimm's Fairytales. Not so many good endings.
    Dune
Rendezvous with Rama by Arthur C. Clarke
Also, strangely I read Shakespeare's plays before going to bed, visualising the stage and the characters as I read. Even up to the colour of the sky and what the audience look like.
    Sharpe's Waterloo by Cornwell
    Seeker
Around the World in Eighty Days.

Basically, these are some of the many books/plays I would read/read again, they stay in my mind - the characters and their motives, the world created etc etc.

I thought it was very original and very well written. I've never read Cather in the Rye so I can't judge on that.

    War and Peace - Tolstoy
Achtung-Panzer! - Guderian (this is like my bible, I forsee myself readign it many times over in the future)
    Panzer Leader - Guderian
An Intimate History of Humanity - Zeldin (soemthign I will have to re-read for sure)
    Starship Troopers
The Last Continent - Pratchet (great story, an Aussie will get all the jokes)

I can't think of any more right now, but I am thoroughly enjoying Russka, which I'm reading now.

Yeah but 1984 is good, IMHO its much better then Animal Farm
Animal Farm is just a short story with an obvious message, 1984 is a proper novel.
