Thats not what guard mode is, guard mode is the shield icon in the HUD which, when enabled, means your units will hold their ground i.e if you tell archers to attack a target while you have guard mode enabled, they wont pursue the target after it is out of range. The thing you are talking about happens automatically when a unit is stationary.
Hi there.
No.
Guard Mode is a way to ensure that your units remains in their formation/position. When GM is on a unit in melee will allow it self to be engaged, but when the enemy pulls out, the unit will stand still and not follow the enemies. When GM is off, your units might persue the enemy units that has attacked them, breaking the formation.
I always leaves my hoplites in Guard Mode. Best not have my formation broken, making weaknesses.

I only turn off guard when my flanks are covered and the enemy is at least slightly or fewer. It's fun to watch hoplites suddenly move an entire enemy stack by themselves and proceed to steamroll them.![]()
AH! alot of people are viewing this thread but not posting
Well I voted when they are in guard mode. Otherwise they're like filthy undisciplined barbarians :p
I was once an Angel of Total War Heaven, but gave up my wings for a life on the sea of battle.
Guard mode is of course best for phalanxes, but I sometimes turn off guard mode if the phalanx gets infiltrated by cavalry and are unable to properly get their spears out again.
Taking out guard mode makes units more aggressive from my experience. They seem to have a little bit more of a push, but like Genius said, it can force their formation to break and their swords to be pulled out.
