Default Kiev Rus! What's their story?

So what's the deal with the Kievites? I just started a game with them with savage AI on VH, late game. I don't see alot mentioned about them so I am interested to know what challenges lie ahead? I made some early alliances with Hungary and Novgorod. I also picked up a few rebel provinces.

The troops seem mostly militia style, but I like them so far. Do I have to worry about those crazy mongols running wild on me? This is my first campaign in the east so I am in the dark with how things play out on that side of the map.

Looking forward to getting deeper into this campaign as I like the style of their units and the character models look great!

You are going to die ... No, seriously. All Russian campaigns have to face ultimate enemy- Timurids...Everything else is beatable...Good luck

If you play that far. I've played a polish campaign and a novgorod campaign and never saw the timurids and only saw the mongols once, and if they had come my way I would have destroyed them easily. They have to cover a lot of ground and a lot of river crossings to get to you. And if you lose a few eastern settlements it doesn't matter, you can retake them from an overstretched and greatly weakened Mongols. By the late game your bread basket will be Ukraine and poland and possibly Italy and Greece, your east will be somewhat expendable if it even comes to that. If your anything like me you will complete the campaign or move on to another one before the timurid event. And I don't even like to blitz, I just get ADD and start another lol.

I'm playing as them right now. I allied with Novgorod and together we took out the Lithuanians (who will prolly attack you if not allied) and the Order. Nevermind the Tirimuds get ready for the Mongols they appear to be very strong in numbers. Im at turn 62 right now and we just started fighting. Goodluck.

Ussualy I kill Kiev. But most of times, the mongols are there already. Never saw Kiev and Novgorod any game surviving at mongols like AI.

I think their only unique unit is Kievan Palace Guard, I miss having the BftB rosters.
