    Default Baktria

OK, some people may remember last time I had a thread like this but with the Pahlava. I have finally nailed that faction but now my problem is with Baktria. I like playing on Hard/Hard but I can't seem to get off the ground without Saka horses running down my northern border and Seleukid phalanxes tearing up Baktra. Can someone please help me (for the second time ). I just need some things like where to expand and what armies to use against the Saka, but any help is appreciated. And finally I have seen the guide written for Baktria but that is outdated so I can't use it

    Thanks in advance

hard battle = Saka horse archers will be as strong as hellenic Hippeis in melee , and worse, they'll have arrows to soften you early on!

my 2 cents : more archer spearmen spam to counter them

gather all your army, head west, sack Babylon and seleukeia, destroy everything including those wonders, pull out your troops and max out taxes there... built mines in Baktra, just defend for more 12 turn and soon you'll be swimming in money

    NOOOOOOO I refuse

If I do that it gets far too easy once I start rolling in money, I prefer the challenge the whole way through

VH Campaign difficulty....or possibly setting yourself challenges.

I remember once playing through my Makedonia campaign without using any pike units. Was fun. You'd be surprised how versatile Makedon's heavy infantry is when it's all you have.

H and VH battle difficulties add nothing except stat boni. They aren't challenging, they're retarded. If you want historical accuracy, play Medium battles and M, H, or VH campaign. Personally, I pay M/M without blitzing (except with some factions that don't survive otherwise).

There are hundreds of threads of advice on Baktria. Here's one:

    http://forums.totalwar.org/vb/showth...-on-VH-M-EB1.2

Read it for a sound strategy. An alternative (my way) would be going east and securing the Khyber pass - with some skill you can make money right after taking Kophen.

When I got totally stuck on my Pahlava campaign I tried Baktria out, and got quite far before deciding to have another crack at Pahlava.

To start, I disbanded a unit of Darha (sp?) riders, jacked my taxes up, and moved all three generals and the rest of my armies East and North, left a client ruler and an army there to fend off Saka's repeated attempts at it, then went about conquering India etc. Your economy'll be a little bit rickety right up to the point where you can afford mines, saving your money for these is totally worth it as you'll become suprisingly rich.

Once I hit the eastern-most territory I headed down seawards, making everything a client kingdom until I took the south easternmost province for the port and naval facilities. With those, you can invade North Arabia with no consequences, or you can invade South Arabia with consequences and give the Sabba a good kicking.

When you're at this point, you can turtle for a bit until you have built your economy up far enough to support good armies. You'll have a period where you make enough money per turn to keep upgrading, and very few people you need to fight. I found one problem with Baktria is that some of my best troops seemed to be centered around the easternmost territories, and I had to upgrade governments to get them. Indo-Hellenic phalanxes are the only ones I'd feel comfortable sending against elite Ptolemic phalanxes, which is probably what they'll eventually face as the Selukids seem to get the beat down every time I play this game. That said, I always keep some of the territories over there as type IV government so I can get those Guild Warriors from India, those guys rock hard.

Also in another thread, somebody mentioned that you can pay off factions with "regular tributes", just 10 mnai a turn seems to work. I maintained trade with the Selukids, although when they went to war with an ally, I sided with their enemy as I was inevitably going to have to betray them myself.

Sorry for my directions being vague by the way, but I'm still relearning all the province names.

When you say east and north, did you mean towards India and fighting the Saka? That seems like a death wish

It's funny you should say that because I wanted to do that for the Romans but the game just refused to start up

You'd need to rename internally one faction to slavs to make that work...

If you want to do that on the EB code all I can say is good luck... you'll need that and lots of patience

all you need is notepad++ and rename all the internal coding of "saba" to "slavs"

Argh I can't be bothered then, but thanks anyway. And an update as to how my Baktria campaign is going - It hasn't. I gave up on it, I just can't get my head round it, so I played as Pahlava instead. But I will complete a game as them sometime, so thank you everyone for your help

Yes, it's not hard to do, it's just the amount of files you need to modify that makes it pretty long and easy to miss something somewhere.

Yeah I do some little mods for myself but eb has scripts and stuff and to be honest I like it the way it is so I am not going to change it for the sake of 1 campaign
