    Default What's your OOB?

I started on EB for the first time yesterday. I'm wondering what a solid OOB would be, that you more experienced players might use in an early part of the game. I'm starting as Rome on M/M and so far I've taken Tarentum (kind of a bad, 12 season campaign, since I started with 2 "battle groups" I sent one to the city, sieged for 6 seasons, got defeated when they sallied, fortunately I took their numbers down far enough that my second "battle group" jumped back on the siege immediately after I pulled back my first group to rearm, then waited out the siege and took the city [might I also add, that it was a lot of fun ]). Anyway, those two "battle groups" I started out with aren't really that great, since it appears they each just have 1 regiment of each unit type, making 8 regiments each (7 not counting a general), and since every Eleutheroi city around me has nearly full stacks. I'm a little nervous about combining both of my battle groups into one legion (probably not a technically accurate term) but now I have 4 cities that can start churning out units. So what would a solid, early legion look like?

Also, this is by far the best R:TW mod I've ever played (though I haven't played R:TR yet).

I would recommend reading this for playing with the Romans:

If you look in the guides, there is a wonderfull guide from Quintus Sertorius (sp).
The OOB for romans can be divided in two kinds
    1: Realistic
    2: Best

    1: A realistic setup is:
    2 hastati
    2 princeps
    1 triari
    1 equite
4 alied troops (Samnite, brutians or whatever merc).
1 pedites Extraordiary (A must have, they are uber)
1 alied cav (campanians, tarentines or a merc).
    2 velites or leves
1 or 2 sling or archer.

These setup is te same for Camilian and polybian.

    2: Best
Stack pedites extraordinary and princeps with Kretans and its a winner.

    Camilian:
same as above, but with the addition of 1 rorarii
These setup is te same for Camilian and polybian.

It's like spamming Restorers in Supreme Commander/FA, or playing Necrons in Dawn of War. Though the AI likes to do it. One of my ongoing campaigns has AI controlled Romans who keep spamming a super-nasty combination of Pedites Extraordinarii, Triarii, and Neitos

Necrons, they are overpowered and infuriating. It just gives me more pleasure when my Orkz beat them to a pulp.

Mine for Camillan and Polybian was 3 hastati, 3 principes, 3 triarii, 1 general, two italian cavalry (tarantine, extraordinarii, campanicii or polybian/camillan citizen cavaly) and two ''auxiliary cavalry'' eg gallic noble, ligurian, numidian, merc, etc), one samnite medium spearmen, one pedite extraordinarii, and one bruttian infantry. add a unit of kretan archers, balearic slingers and one of rorarii or any other skirmishers.

    RE: The10th Legion
I didnt add the Rorarii because they are a little worthless, I know they should be there.
For allied skirmishers I always have problems finding some. There arent that many around.
Therefor I go with 2 leves or velites.

    RE: Knofoda
Your army is for realism to cavalry heavy, it is nice to see you work with the allied troop as any roman general should.

Rorarii are great to guardo ocupied cities, they are cheap and come with a huge amount of soldiers.

Rorarii are actually good troops in my opinion.
Why not get mercanary allied skirmishers?

Really? I always thought 4 cav excluding the general was standard. It also allows me to put 2 units of cavalry on each wing which was broadly historical.

No for a roman legion its to heavy IMO 1 unit for each wing must do.
It hasd to do withe the 20 unit limit. Ofcourse everybody should play as he likes but I stick with 2 cav.

Historically the romans had not much cavalry in their armies and I simulate that with using 2 cav per army.

    re athanaric

I didnt say I liked it I play with the historical legion.
I just wanted to show whats the differernce between realism and an winner/gay lol

    re 10thLegion

What merc skirmishers are available? I only can use Peltasts and I think that they are to powerful for my legions,
it would be like adding an extra hastatii.
Thats why I use leves or sometimes Akontistai because these units are wothles after trowing their Javs.

Now that guide works, X Legion, thanks. Unfortunately I must be pretty dense because the guy keeps talking about diplomacy as if its this grand thing you can use to pit your enemies against each other better. I'm not sure I get what he means, because as far as I can tell the diplomatic engine in R:TW didn't work like it should and even then was shoddy at best, so what does he mean?

"Diplomacy" means Forced Diplomacy and bribes.

QS used the Force diplomacy script.
Its used to force the AI to accept your diplomatic propositions.
