    Holy Roman Empire campaign AAR

    Intro

Seems that until this moment HRE has followed historical pattern of another great empire - Byzantium. With every century, borders and influence of Kaiser are shrinking. A century has passed since the renaissance of Otto I. and there it is, once mightiest and largest empire in Europe was reduced to merely 6 regions... It is clear that Emperor can't count on papal support. The Pope wants land, and he can't get it if german emperor stands at his doorstep. Relations are already damaged, one wrong step and emperor is excommunicated and vultures will attack. Position of HRE is not ideal one. It offers opportunities and dangers. Borders are surrounded by rebels, and early expansion is easy, however it wont be long until emperor finds himself surrounded by catholic factions eager to expand. Hungary and Poland to the east, Denmark to north, France to west, and powerful italian states to south. War on multiple fronts is unavoidable situation and fact. Only great diplomatic and military skills of Kaiser will save empire from further decline or even doom.

    Chapter 1: The Gathering

    Anno Domini 1080

Misery, one word to describe this rotten country. Poor cities amid dark forests and mountains. And to call it an empire... It doesn't matter, it wont be like that for long. Great leader can create empire from the scratch. Alexander, Rome, Charlemagne... so why wouldn't Henry. Yes, I will rebuild this empire and rule supreme over Europe. Nations will tremble by the only sound of a name - Holy Roman Empire. And this country is more then just a scratch. Frankfurt and Nuremburg have great potential, not to mention greatest jewel in the imperial crown - Vienna. No sea on the sight, but can become richer and profitable than most of ports. Those pathetic forts on the south can give more then militias at the moment but they will. Stone by stone, citadels will be built, and steel armor will soon rattle in this lands.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

Henry, my son. My only comfort. He will help me. he will conquer for me. After all, empire will be his one day. He is young, but it is time to learn. He is sent to Lorraine, rich province on the west. Metz is capital. One step form Rheims, two from Paris and french crown. It will be his school. Great resposibility, holding lives of his soldiers in his hands. If he loose control only for a moment his armies might suffer terrible losses. He will do good.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

In the meantime other forts must be taken. Hamburg first, if we don't hurry Danes will take it. Army is already there, and general from Frankfurt will lead them. It is a potentialy rich harbor, after developing maritime trade and mining. Most of all, if it becomes ours, Danes will be blocked in Scandinavia, until they decide to fight through. Armies from Nuremburg and Vienna will march eastwards. Drang nach Osten is traditional policy and eastern provinces lie uncontested. Magdeburg is first step, most western of east insurgent settlements.
Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

    Anno Domini 1082

Militia from Austria is already in Vienna, they are moving north to Magdeburg. It is unsafe to let them go without of general. Dietrich von Saxony is in Nuremberg and he will lead eastern campaign. For now he will take Nuremburg militia and merge with Austria militia in Bohemia. This army is not much either by quantity or quality but it will do against rebels. Hamburg and Metz are besieged and in several years they will be imperial domains.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

    Anno Domini 1086

Italy, land of great and wealthy cities. Half of European cities with stone wall is concentrated here, and centuries ago - it was ruled by my predecessors. Italians are tough nut and they will be most worthy enemies. Long ago have German emperors fought against wretched Italian insurgent. Somehow they thing they have right to be independent. HRE has ruled this area for centuries and it will again. God is my witness that Empire will once more rule Italy and emperors will be crowned in Rome. I control only Bologna now, and i have sacrified revenues and built castle there. Powerful stronghold and unit factory will be needed if my plan is to succeed. I, Kaiser, will lead this campaign by myself, and i took Bologna as my castle. Henry has west, Dietrich east, and south is mine.

    Anno Domini 1088

Siege of Metz has now taken several years, and fort is ready to fall. Rebels are starving and their attack is matter of days. This city will be fine addition to the empire with its fertile grounds and iron mines. Its importance from strategic few is incalculable. Sometime in the future this will be starting point for invasion on France.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

    Anno Domini 1090

First concrete success had to waited for ten year, but it was worth of it. Prince Henry took Metz, and he did it flawlessly, with minimum losses. There is no time for resting, castle of Bern must be taken before Milan does it first. Saxony has been taken and Danes can look at Hamburg only across the border - with envy. Dietrich has besieged Magdeburg and it is next to fall before our might. He will need help tough, so part of army that captured Hamburg is already on the move to south. Despite this successes dark thoughts crowd my mind as i see large armies of Poland and Denmark cross borders. What their intentions are, it is not certain, but caution is necessary. Facing danish army of this size at the moment would be dangerous and success uncertain. War against both Poland and Denmark would be disaster. Only time will show how this situation will resolve.

    Anno Domini 1092

Armies on east and west continue their activities. Prince Henry and his army are in Switzerland in front of castle. Bern will be besieged next year. Armies at Magdeburg are prepared for taking of fort.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

    Anno Domini 1096

Two years ago Magdeburg has been taken. It will be used as base for eastern campaigns. On the east lie Breslau, Stettin and Prague. Tactics will be most important here. What to conquer first? Stettin is important in case of war with Denmark and Breslau against Poland. Both Thorn and Krakow are only two turns away from Breslau, and it would be very wise to take it and transform to fort. Prague is cute addition to empires economy, but without any strategical value. This was dilemma from the last turn. In the meantime Poles has realized importance of Breslau and taken in. Rebels garrisoned at Stettin are too strong to be defeated by polish armies for now, so Prague was decided to be the second goal for DNO. Dietrich is moving south.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

    Anno Domini 1104

8 years have past and some things have been changed in empire. HRE capital Frankfurt has been changed to castle, and it will be used to train armies for western border. Former castle of Hamburg has been changed to large town and its development is in progress. In future it is supposed to become one of the pillars of nations economy. Prague and Bern are besieged for some time now. Prince Henry first attempt to besiege Bern failed as his army was to weak. However reinforcements were sent from Innsbruck and siege was successfully laid. Cities are slowly getting larger and wealthier.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

    Anno Domini 1106

Good news Empires armies are mightiest in Europe! This status probably wont be held for long, but it is good to know that army is amongst strongest.
Bad news - danish army i was concerned about has proceeded westward and taken Antwerp. That is something it will have to be dealt later.

    ...continuing chapter I...

    Anno Domini 1108

Foreign diplomats move across HRE territories in large numbers. This is opportunity that can be thanked to geographic setting. Trade agreement and map sharing is acquired without much effort. Up to this year HRE acquired two alliances: with Venice and Byzantium. It was not surprising when these two started war against each other, however it was necessary to choose side. Logical choice was Byzantium. Although i chosen orthodox instead of catholic faction, Venice was on black list. This will be perfect opportunity to take annex Venice, as a first step of reconquering Italy. Pope will resist, but large sums of money will appease him. Excommunication is not an option, risk is to great. Religion must be used as advantage. Prince Henry achieved great victory once more. Castle Bern is not important from strategic view, conquest of Italy will start from Bologna, but it is not safe to leave it to milanese. Princes activities stop here for now, as he is entrusted with guarding western border. Peace is only temporary luxury.

    Anno Domini 1124

Crusade. Both blessing and curse. Jerusalem could be taken, as neighboring regions. They are rich, but also muslim, and have owners. If they are to be kept, population must be slaughtered and converged to Catholicism. Armies must be taken to far distant Judea, and leave homeland without defense. Not joining may lead to excommunication, and successful crusade leaves land surrounded by hostile mighty muslim factions. Armies necessary to keep these regions might bring empire to bankruptcy. Crusade brings economical crisis, war, confrontation, but also prestige and good relations with Pope. Successful crusade might leave me opened hand for war in Europe - for a while. It is great dilemma, thankfully there is some time to bring decision. Jerusalem wont go anywhere. Florence, only uncontested italian town lies very near castle of Bologna. It must be taken before someone else does. It wont be easy, attack must be well prepared, as italian militias are strong and will resist. Town, once developed might be very rich, also, if Empire is to rule Italy, i can't allow someone else take it.

    Anno Domini 1126

Eastern campaign is finally done. Dietrich has incorporated lands on the northeast, inhabited by vile slavs. There is no more uncontested lands on our borders, except Tuscany, which is already besieged, and war is imminent. It is only question whom will I attack first or - who will attack first. It is time to develop cities, increase revenues, and prepare for war.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

    Anno Domini 1132

Florence has fallen with minimum losses. Italian factions will not allow this power ratio. It is only matter of years when a war will break up. It is hard for me to believe we will face with only one enemy, it is more likely that all will attack at the same time. Bologna will be at humongous pressure so it must be guarded with maximum units. It must not fall. It is the key of success of entire operation. Venice is occupied in war with Byzantium on east and sicilian cities are rather far, so they are not immediate threat. Milan on the other hand has developed cities and mighty armies very close and dealing with them will be extremely difficult. There is no time to loose. It is not acceptable to wait for attack. I must act first. Venice lies undefended just across the great river of Po. It is opportunity that cannot be missed. Venice - beware. Alliances forged in last few years could be helpful. England might weaken France, and alliance with Milan will give me some time while i deal with Venice. It is a fact that this alliance is destined to be broken soon. Backstabing snakes wont leave me holding two italian settlement at peace.

    Chapter 2: Italian Affairs

    Anno Domini 1134

Milan's sneaky attack wasn't waited foe long. Bern is besieged. War against Venice is no longer option. I will fight only against Milan as long as it is possible, but somehow i don't thing that will be short tempered. Milan controls few regions, but those are relatively wealthy. Its militia is strong, and armies massive. They can count on the support from Pope, Empire cannot. The army at Bern is small, as is imperial garrisoned inside town. Duke himself leads siege, and this is opportunity to slain him. The question is, can low quality imperial militia fight back high quality italian militia?

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

    Anno Domini 1146

Italian armies has been defeated at Bern and Duke killed. This however hasn't damaged Milanese cause much. This was only a minor battle, without any significance. Pope has shown obvious favoritism for Milan. Although HRE is still catholic faction, our attack are quickly judged and forced to retreat under threat of excommunication, but Milanese aren't sanctioned at all! This war will be long diplomatic fight of Papal bribes, and provoking Milanese attack, in hope of Papal support. It seems Pope has lost its marbles. He has taken his entire army out of Lazio. It is unclear where it is going but it is highly disturbing view.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

    Anno Domini 1156

War with Milan is taking too long. It is impossible to do anything without being excommunicated. No matter amounts of money i donate to Rome, and Milanese constant attack, Milan is still Papal favorite. Damned snakes are playing dirty. They are sending assassins to slay leaders. Slain by the knife in back, what an undignified death for chivalry general. And they murdered Prince Henry, heir to imperial throne. backstabbing bastards got literal meaning. To make things worse, Hungary has joined Milan by besieging Vienna. This city must not be lost. Without it our economy will surely collapse. Fortunately, Hungarians are quite busy in their affairs on the east, so i don't expect much activity from their side.
A battle. Odds are bad. High quality ranged cavalry and dismounted knights against militia. Stone walls will have. This will be hard battle to win, for both armies.

Lack of supremacy in numbers has denied them a victory, and strong wall have ensured that Vienna will remain imperial city in the future. Hungarian offensive forces on the west are broken and for a while, i can calmly focus on Italian campaign.

Risky business. Siege of Milan will be condemned as heresy and banned from Pope, unless it falls before that happens. This will be major battle, Milanese reinforcements can be surely expected very soon, and their action will be swift and bloody. Milan is large and wealthy city. In the case of victory, HRE will be richer for one more strong and wealthy city and will be step closer dominating northern Italy. Milan will loose its capitol, and their most richest and developed city.

Spoiler Alert, click show to read:

Fortune or misfortune? Hard to tell. More then 1400 of Milan's soldiers on its way to storm away siege that wrapped around their capital. This however means that if i am victorious i will not have to worry about Pope, because city will fall before he reacts.

Supporting vile attacker and ill-treating defender. Another threat and Genoa will have to wait. I have no patience for these Italian snakes and backstabbers as my father. Anno Domini 1178

Pope, of course involved, and Imperial army had to retreat from Dijon. So did the one besieging Oslo. Large army has been sent to Scandinavia to conquer it and so close that front. As it seem it will have to wait. That insolent snake in Rome will cost me my Empire. My patience is at end.

    Anno Domini 1180

Hundred years have past since my father started to rebuilt and strengthen the empire and much has been achieved. Saxony, Swiss, Jutland, Pomerania, Lorraine, Bohemia, Magdeburg and most of northern Italy has been reconquered, cities developed, economy thrived. Large armies of Empire now march through enormous piece of continent to expand it even greater glory. Our armies are in Burgundy, Norway, and two in Italy. And one is on its way to enter Polish territory. Their arrogance will be punished.

Italy hasn't been subjugated yet, and every neighbor has declared war against HRE. This continent will burn. Maybe i am not allowed to attack Denmark and Milan, but there is no Papal orders not to attack France yet. He cannot order me to defend against all of them. Rheims is going down. So does Breslau. It haven't even been captured yet by Muslim faction, so i don't have to declare war on anyone. That city can produce enormous wealth, it will be an excellent prey. Venetian army at Vienna has been successfully driven back from Austria. Sicily has taken castle of Ragusa away from them, so town of Zagreb is only threat from Venice to my borders at this point. Excommunicated or not, HRE will be one and only Kingdom over kingdoms. Genoa has already fallen, and Italy is not under my rule. My father goal has been reached. Dijon is besieged on the west, and after its fall, Milan will be erased from maps, and our rule in Italy uncontested. Pope has strong words, but without any defender close by, he can't do anything. He made a mistake. Once Empire was guardian of Papacy and ruled Italy. It is our right given by God. Pope foolishly resisted and alienated with HRE to prevent us to take what is ours. Now, Rome is mine, and like once Charlemagne, i will be crowned for emperor of Rome. Pope can still be dangerous, and diplomatic (or financial) solution will have to be find. Marseilles, french jewel on south has been besieged, and its riches will soon be floating to HRE treasury. It has been confirmed. HRE is most developed and richest faction in the World. Nice aar. I've enjoyed reading it so far. I'm assuming this is Vanilla? In almost every campaign I've done, by turn 50 or so I'm at war with everyone. I find it's more peaceful in the retrofit mod. I would advise you to beware the Pope though. I ignored him in an England campaign and got excommunicated after taking all of Western Europe to Northern Italy and he then sent full stacks at me on 3 fronts and I lost a 1/3 of my empire before giving up.

This is my first, i was to lazy to write novels and edit screenshots like many others, and english is not my language, so... Well, as for the Pope, he controls nothing, so he can't attack me any more. I am preparing third chapter. It is going to be posted tomorrow and there is resolution of relationship with many factions, including Pope

Wow pretty interesting so far. I've got a few tips for you if you wouldn't mind:
Do you have a program like windows picture viewer? If so, you can crop your pictures to detail what exactly we're supposed to be looking at on the campaign map. You can do the same for battle, which brings me to my next piece of advice:
I know you're focusing on the campaign, but it wouldn't hurt to include a few more battle pics of important battles, like the death of the Pope (I would have loved to see that!), the final battle of an almost destroyed faction, a heroic victory, or a decisive battle that determines the turning point of a major war.
But still, good AAR so far. Keep up the good work, and I'll be reading as the HRE takes its rightful place in the world!

Good updates, though further descriptions of the battles would be nice. As you said, English isn't your native language and there are a good number of grammar errors. Still, you'll get better with time so keep going.
