Default Need help- RTW seems completely screwed on Vista

I am an experienced player, I know how to do most basic mods and have played RTW, BI, RTR and FOE. I normally play on my fairly decent laptop with xp and its fine but a little slow. But I recently tried uploading it onto a pc with vista and higher specs to run it faster, and problems came up. First I had to work out how to mod at all, you have to move the files to documents, change them, and put them back, then I had to find the preferences file which was hiding in some virtual folder thingy. So I edited it so I dont have to play the prelude but now when I went to start a campaign, I get a choice of Brutii or Julii, no scipii, and for some reason its set to start in AD 1. (this happens when you dont edit preferences at all!)
On top of that if you click start on campaign or custom battle it just goes straight back to the previous page. I've re-installed it, but to no avail. descr_strat is normal, as is everything else i've checked. I even put on the error check and all it comes up with is that in descr_strat there is an expected start date at line 21, though i've messed around with that and all it does is change where it expects it to be, currently line 16.
I am completely lost. When I typed this into google nothing came up. Please help.
