Mary Jane Seacole (née Grant), 1805 - 1881. Born in Jamaica to a Jamaican mother and a Scottish lieutenant in the British army, she learned traditional medicine from her mother and by observing army doctors. Her claim to fame was her involvement catering to and nursing the sick and wounded during the Crimean War. (Florence Nightingale, something of a 19th century Karen sadly, had her reservations.)
