Brigadier Rosendo Porlier y Asteguieta, whose men may have been the first to set foot on Antarctica in 1819 after being blow off course and being shipwrecked while on their way to Peru. At least that's what I gather from the articles written in Spanish.

Rosendo Porlier y Asteguieta is the correct answer! He was the commander of a squadron sent by Ferdinand VII to reinforce the loyalists in Peru. Unfortunately for the Spanish, their ships were extremely vulnerable after the Napoleonic Wars due to lack of maintenance. San Telmo, the flagship of the division, disappeared somewhere in the south of Cape Horn. Its remainings were found in an island near Antarctica, which means that if Rosendo and his crew managed to survive the shipwreck, they would be the first humans to have set foot on the last, unexplored continent.

The hood looks like it is from the Maghreb. I can only assume it is some Algerian or Moroccan figure. Could be Tunisian or Libyan but I would be more willing to bet on the former two.

You would be right to do so.

I know that there's another portrait where the two look very similar, but this is not Cosimo

    you are very close, though

    correct!

sorry for being so long, I was out, over to you!

However, if you have time have a read at Giovanni's story... there aren't much info in english on wikipedia, still work a quick read. Personally his character really amazes me, and even more considering how opposite it was to that of his son Cosimo, who later became the first Gran Duke of Tuscany.
