Default The Cursus Honorum (Magistracies and Offices of State)

The following offices are open for all senators. You will be notified in advance of all elections, which occour during the latter few days of a term.

[FIELDSET2="THE CURSUS HONORUM"]Censor - The Censor is the highest position in Roman society, responsible for public morals and for the upkeep of the public Census. The Censor has the right to issue the Nota Censora, a black mark against a Senator's name in the public records, which will disqualify that Senator from office in the next election cycle to simulate the damning effect it could have on a public persona. The Censor may also Censure, or officially scold, any senator or magistrate.

Censors are responsible for enrolling Romans into classes, and may move a Senator from the Plebeian to the Patrician (upper) class once per term. Senators may find it to their advantage to convince the Censor to perform this move to better their political chances...

To reflect the aristocratic nature of this position, Patrician candidates will always receive an additional 3 votes during elections. This position is NOT essential, and will simply not be filled in the event that no candidate is presented.

Consul - The two Consuls preside jointly over the Senate, and act as commanders-in-chief of the military. The Consuls are required to bring all motions proposed by the Senate to a vote. When on campaign against an enemy nation, Consuls are required to maintain a war thread about their specific campaign in the Curia, where they will post all narratives and AARs relating to their command. Consuls have the right to veto the decisions of their colleagues.

The Consulship is the pinnacle of the career of the Roman statesman, and as such, members who have not served as Praetor should not apply.

    Proconsular governor
    - The Proconsular governor is a provincial governor of Consular status. They have full authority in their given province to tax, construct buildings, and raise local troops, but may not invade the territory of another nation without senatorial consent. It was customary for ex Consuls to receive a Proconsular assignment after their terms ended.

To become a Proconsular governor a senator MUST have served as Consul, no exceptions.

Praetor - Praetors are the judges of Roman society. In the case of a criminal trial, the Praetor will serve as the judge. Praetors have a wide array of sentences available to pass against convicts, but in capital cases the punishments are usually execution (in case of treason) or exile. It is illegal for a Praetor to order the execution of a Roman citizen.

Praetors will also lead field armies, if necessary, or conduct the Senate if appointed to do so in the absence of the Consuls.

Senators must have served as a Quaestor before running for Praetor (with exceptions made as necessary).

    Propraetorian governors
[COLOR=Black] - Propraetorian governors have the same duties and responsibilities as the Proconsular governor, but with the status of a Praetor.

Propraetorian governors, of course, must have served as Praetor[/fieldset]

Tribune of the People - The Plebeian tribunes were installed in the early days of the Republic to guard the rights of the lower classes, the Plebeians, in the Senate. The Tribune of the people has the right to veto any decision made by any magistrate within the city of Rome, as well as any act proposed in the Senate. Tribunes are also sacrosanct, meaning that any person that does violence to them will be declared an outlaw, stripped of citizenship, and may be killed at will with no consequences.

The Tribuneship is open only to Plebeians; you must specify this character trait.
