Default How high or low do you keep taxes?

In MW2 I always kept my taxes as low as possible but it seems like population gets out of control easier in Rome and that might not be the best thing...I was playing as Seculids and had everything very high for the first 20 turns but now I'm wondering if I should turn it to very low to promote population growth in Turkey because they're all under 2K population and if/when Macedon attacks or Thrace I'm in trouble.

I find I have no choice but to keep them all at low - otherwise they will all be yellow faces....then blue... etc

I usually keep taxes as high as public order allows. If it's yellow or green face (sometimes even blue) it's fine, but once the city hits red face (I think it was 70% public order) then it's time to lower them. Or build public order buildings, if any are available.

Although sometimes I keep taxes low if I really need a settlement to grow. So, in your cituation, It might be a good idead tolower taxes to encourage pop growth, especially if you have enough income already

Hmm well I can keep almost all of them very high if I build enough peasants in the queue or at least high but I don't know if I should...I have more money than I can spend so I'm thinking I should lower them.

The faces don't matter too much. The percentage of PO is the important thing. You're fine until that hits less than 70%.
Anyway, I keep my taxes as high as possible without riots, unless I'm shooting for a big town for military purposes. Then I'll lower it to "Low."

It is better to plan cities in advance.

It is a good thing to know that population growth is countered by squalor.
24k population produces squalor that counters 8% pop growth.
9k population produces squalor that counters 3% pop growth.

If you want a 24k city, add buildings with health/pop growth bonus (farm, market, etc.) until you have +8% growth (without squalor deducted). This way they will stop growing after 24k.

Of course, it is not possible to plan every city. There are some which are growing corn (Carthage, Nile delta, Syracuse) and will spiral out of control anyway.
Also, as barbarians, with level 3 buildings available, you are pretty much hopeless in fighting squalor. (very few cities stay below 3% growth if you build level 2 markets)

If you have a too big city, just exit with the garrison, let it revolt, siege and exterminate.

i wonder how one does anything with population in modern warfare 2. except play the airport level to reduce it but still.

however in total war games the afforementioned baby boom is something i seek to avoid at all costs. I keep taxes at Very high and regularly let big cities rebel so i can kill them and thin out the population. works like a charm.

Highest as possible, if cannot higher because of PO: build entertainment or law buildings. If the population growth is 0% i'll keep them a bit lower (if the town needs to grow) if the town has all buildings need to build constructed and needs to grow: low tax.

    Hi there.
I tax each city after my own needs. For example I do not max out taxes in a city that still needs to grow, while full grown cities are taxed as high as possible, with out the faces becomming red. Even if it means negative population growth.

As some others have said, I think the higest rate possible is the way to go. Though there isn't too much incentive to get the 24,000 pop. level with many factions, as 12,000 usually does a good enough job by itself. Take TSE for instance. You can get Silver Shield Pikes and Catahracts at 12,000 while 24,000 gives you imitation legions and Companions, neither of which is needed after the units you get earlier.

I generally try to keep it on high or very high seen as taxes can be a major source of income, however, sometimes i have to lower if i want to keep a settlement happy or increase population growth

It really depends on the stage of the campaign and the size of the city. I don't think that there is one set rule.

And lol @ population control in Modern Warfare 2! He probably meant MTW2...

I always tax Very High, unless the mood face is red, in which case I make them as high as possible.

I usually set all taxes to the highest level in the beginning, and feed population growth by transferring peasants from captured lands.
