some archers are better than others... peasant archers are worthless against anyone with armor stronger than leather... the best archers in the game does have armor piercing arrows (both x-bows and bows) although their effectiveness has been dampened through a lowering of the damage dealt... a longbow is still really good against unarmored infantry and it does kill of some knights also, but all in all they are a lot more nerfed...

But don't let this dampen you spirits... the game is still worth it, although you might want to find new tactics than you are used to...

Well, in third age, you can play as an elven faction, make a full stack of missile units(and some cavalry to counter theirs, if they're using any) and said stack can kill other stacks without any losses.
In SS, I havn't really played as a missile heavy faction, but I've found missiles very effective. They don't do much on an open battlefield if the enemy closes the distance quickly, but in a long siege game where they can fire most of their arrows, each unit can get 200+ units, and these are just peasant archers.(Unit size was large, if I recall.)

elves on lotr lore supposed to be archery gods, so that's normal... realism oriented mods on the other hand supposed to not make archers overpowered, I can't see why people comparing both

Archers are more effective than vanilla (or at least, more realistic, you have to use the right units of course) but less effective than Third Age archers (not surprising, as napoleonic pointed out above).

I had 4 sets of musliim archers (for sicily. I love how they discriminate by religion >:O) andthey tore apart two spear militia units without them getting close enough too harm us. There were no survivors >=D

Muslim archers = Elven archers in the real world. They were pretty deadly. In fact, the High Elves in TATW are modded over Egypt. Coincidence? I THINK NOT!

Of course, I don't know how that's specifically represented in SS, but you had an interesting example.

Actually I was playing as Sicily. Muslim archers on the top of the hill while Norman Soldiers engage the line, and Norman knights flank, is THE most deadly combination.

Funny thing. When my family first got Rome TW, me and my brothers played a 3 way custom match. The one who was Egypt used allll archers. Didn't work

I thinks some archers is better (especially who have armor piercing arrows). However some is weaker.

In my game play as Byzantine.I have a stack with 12 Byzantine Guard Archers Trebizond archers (I love archers). My army fighting again the Turk. After rout and kill all of that stack and it cost me half of arrow the only thing left is a couple of Ottoman infantry in loose formation. Then something wrong happen 12 units darken the sky with arrow until they out of ammo and nearly half of those Turkish guys still stand !!

    I'm just playing N/N

My personal favourite are the English Longbowmen and up-tiers... My favourite faction is England and I always have at least 6 stacks of Longbowmen in each full army. They rip-off the enemy before they can get to my lines, normally they chew up to 20/30% of the stack before reaching my lines if I'm not mistaken. And when they do reach the lines they have to face off my Armoured Swordsmen, which themselves are not very easy to riddle with. And even if they survive, they will have to face off a charge from my cavalry at their back

Cassius: "Our men at arms have secured the city. We've received representatives from all the best elements. The senate is with us, the knights are with us."
Brutus:"The pontifs, the urban cohorts, the lictors guild..."
Antony: "Oh, the lictors guild, very good. Only rally the bakers and the flute players and you can put on a festival."

I love using archers, i usually have a 50/50 split between infantary and archers and only cavalry generals bodyguard when fighting huge enemy armies i tyr to make them rout with as many of them still alive as possible so my general can run in and kill all the remaining enemies and usually get to gold chevrons in two battles, it's pretty effective.

I usually do the same, but I have at least 1 unit of Feudal Knights or other Heavy Cavalry or so... since I only use 1 general per army... very effective indeed Just watch them melt!
