Will the european watchtowers in DotS be like the fragile timber watchtowers of vanilla or will they be more like the real thing; of stone.
We've actually been discussing this recently. Yeah they'll probably look more authentic.
In fact we have been discussing options involving having permanent watch towers modelled to look like villages and settlements.
A new mobile phone tower went up in a town in the USA, and the local newspaper asked a number of people what they thought of it. Some said they noticed their cellphone reception was better. Some said they noticed the tower was affecting their health.
A local administrator was asked to comment. He nodded sagely, and said simply: "Wow. And think about how much more pronounced these effects will be once the tower is actually operational."
I personally think we should keep watchtowers in. It has been suggested that the ability to build watchtowers should be removed. But I disagree.
Anyway OP, what makes you think that there were no timber watchtowers in medieval Europe?

There where of course.
But if a lord wanted to erect a permenent watchtower, I suppose he would build it of a much more long-lasting material than wood : such as stone.
And because on the stratmap their permanent, I think it would be reasonable that they be made of stone.
It's a fantastic idea that. Especially as the settlements are in a sense, "Region capitals", rather than settlements per se, I could imagine that running a yes/no event when you start a campaign to allow "Permanent Watchtowers" could place said watchtowers where these smalled hamlets were, or when they were developed. For example, Liverpool was created as a borough in 1207. Should the game turn to that time in game, then perhaps creating a watchtower at the site of Liverpool could well be a nice idea of historical accuracy.
Or, rather than say Hamlet boroughs, small forts not included as PSFs/Wooden Castles?

Maybe can we have culture specific watchtowers?
I'd certainly be weird for factions like Lithuania to have a stone structure when pretty much everything outside of Vilnius was Wooden.
