    Default Royal Families

Hey all new to these forums and am masively impressed by the work that goes on here. A little question of my own tho. How do you change the royal families in the game. For instance i would like to change aragorn to be married to arwen and his son Eldarion. Thanks in advance for any help.

Well you could rename Rose to Arwen, Legolas or Gimli or whatever you want. You couldn't change the picture though. Unless you would want all woman in your faction to look like a Dwarf...

Go to Descr_strat.txt in Medieval II Total War\mods\Third_Age\data\world\maps\campaign\imperial_campaign and search for aragorn. Scroll down a little and you'll see Araphor; rename him eldarion. go down further to thde bit that says
relative Aragorn, Rose, Darla, Araphor, Araglas, end
    relative Halbarad, Darla, end

change the green name to Arwen and the red to eldarion and save.

    Edit:
I'd do it for you but my Eriador has been modded with Ranger BG and some rearranging of start positions.

This alone isn't enough to make the name change work. You have to open up I believe desrc_names in the main third age folder and scroll down to the the section that says Turks (Eriador). From there, scroll down to the female names and add in Arwen in the same way that the rest of the names are entered. To make it work for Arnor too, find the Byzantium section and check for Arwen's name. If it's not there, add her.

Don't you also need to delete strings.bin?

Not in this case. If you were to add a brand new name to the name string database, then you'd have to delete the names.strings.bin file. However, the file that you edit to add an existing name to a different faction is not a string file, and in turn has no strings.bin file to delete.

I don't think it changes it during the game. You'll probably have to restart and i have no idea how to change it otherwise.

I know lore wise arwen wasnt married to aragorn at the time the game starts but it's not lore wise for aragorn to be ruler of eriador or arwen to be married too some random elven guy. I think making the game start with Aragorn married to Arwen is a smaller deviation from lore than either of the two things i mentioned.

Youll have to start a new campaign.
I for myself had the same problem. I did it just like smoesville told you and I remembered that there was a portrait for Eldarion in 1.4. So i took it from the data/ui/custom_battles of 1.4, and put it in the same folder in 2.1.
Than I changed the line in descr_strat like this

character Eldarion, named character, male, heir, age 16, x 90, y 243, portrait Eldarion ;michel delving
    traits Factionheir 1 , LoyaltyStarter 1 , GoodCommander 1 , ReligionStarter 1 , Brave 1 , Just 1

The Eldarion (From Louis Lux I guess) looks like this:

Thanks everyone. Just wondering if there was a guide or a way you could tell me of editing entire royal families?

Thanks, though that is an old version... The new one should be ready this week. And no, there can only be one pic for wives, sons and daughters for each culture.

It's not hardcoded, you can change the limit easily, but it affects all. Elves and Orcs and special characters like Gandalf and Saruman can live forever, but the starting characters of Men are scripted to die around a normal human age, and also the starting Dwarves after a few centuries. (Those that are not present from the start will unfortunately be immortal, but it doesnt really matter since time passes slowly - 1 year is 4 turns.)
