Default CTD's after battles in RTW

    Hey. My system:

    Intel Core i7 920 2.67GHz 2.67GHz
    4 GB RAM (corsair)
    Windows 7 64-bit
Cuda PhysX Nvidea Geforce 260 driver version 8.17.11.9562

RTW gold in Eras pack. (vs 1.5).

I get consistent crashes at some time in campaign battles, just after I finish one. I try to wait at least until the music is over before I close the battle, but it still crashes sometimes. I also had the same problem in Europa Barbareum which frankly keeps me from playing that mod due to the battle length.. so annoying to have to play battles over again especially after a heroic victory you might not be able to repeat.

In a test run with Pontus (vanilla) i managed 3-4 battles before I crashed. Crashes occurs in sieges and open field battles both.

I run the game at large unit sizes, with pretty much as high graphic settings as possible. I experience no lag with this, and surely with such a system why should I? I can run Crysis with no problem.

Anything else I can tinker with without rolling back drivers? I play newer games too...

Just to make it clear: Even if I wait more than 20 second after a battle the crash may still occur. It usually happens when I see the loading screen but before it is completely loaded.

only to be sure: you tried already a clean reinstall? Is UAC actice at your Operation system? I would advice to install RTW not in the standard Programm folder but in a custom one and try again.

I'm running Win7-64 and have a similiar system like you. Vanilla RTW runs fine for me. So i don't think it is a hardware problem.

I installed it on my non-system drive. I have turned off UAC, but it might have been on when I installed RTW not long ago.

Also, I don't think it should matter, but I have modded some units somewhat. I boosted peltasts etc, given javelins AP and rebalanced other units to compensate. I think javelinmen are too weak in vanilla especially considered their cost which IIRC is equivalent to basic heavy/medium infantry. '

Oh and I unlocked all factions except slave and senate.

I could replace the original files and run some tests, but I have a feeling it's something else.

If you've modded RTW in any way it's no longer RTW.....

Make sure that you've added the -show_err switch (as shown in the sticked thread) to the shortcut target properties - it may return a trapped error along with the CTD.

In this day an age, who hasn't modded it somewhat? I have added the line now (which is in itself a modification of the shortcut)...

We'll see. I played a few battles yesterday that worked well btw, waited at least 10 seconds after the victory music was over. Maybe I have been a bit too hasty before, we'll see.

The only thing I ever modded was to get more factions playable in vanilla RTW.

I've been playing RTW mods since 2005 and the only time I launch RTW is to make sure my new install on a new PC actually works before using it a base for mods.

I've contributed to the RTR VII and RSII teams as a beta tester and have played most RTW based mods.

Yeah... the same reason I'm playing it now, I want to play EB but the battles there takes forever and after it crashed as I made a heroic victory against Epiros... well let's just say I can't play it until I know it's fairly stable... just the horror of spending hours fighting battles in a single turn just to see it all be lost!

    Irishron:

I actually enjoyed vanilla RTW alot before I started trying mods, beginning with SPQR, then EB and RTR. The mods are more in debt, but they are also slower, resource intensive, longer battles, frustrating etc.

I'm just talking generally here, there are exception and this does not all apply to all mods. But the point is that people have different likes, and some likes to go all the way when they change something.

When RTW was released, I tried things like more facrions. Then I found RTR 1.0 released and no more reason to mod vanilla. I have two RTW mods I can fire up, fight battles and get a good campaign going. You have a conflict going.

    Medieval2 Tech time:
    1. Update your graphics drivers. 258 drivers have been released.
    2. Install http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en, and
    http://www.microsoft.com/net/Download.aspx.
If the directx installer, says "newer version installed", (a)disable the UAC, (b)download to your desktop, and (c)install from there.
